Thunderstorm Hits New Delhi, NCR Region; IMD Issues Alert Warning For States

It said that all evening schools (second shift, which starts from the afternoon) will remain closed on Tuesday.

In the thunderstorm last week, at least 124 people died and more than 300 were injured in northern states.

While running trains, the Delhi Metro has chose to exercise extreme caution.

In a weather warning issued for the five days until 12 May, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted that a thunderstorm with gusty winds with speeds of up to 70kmph is gradually moving into the sub-Himalayan region in West Bengal and Sikkim.

The government and Department of Education also issued circulars on the MeT warnings of dos and don'ts.

After the meeting, the government issued a list of "dos and don'ts" to deal with any possible situation arising out of the poor weather conditions. It also advised commuters not to travel during a storm. About 13 states had been put on alert by the meteorological department and now Delhi, NCR, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, and Rajasthan have been witnessing some extreme conditions.

"If the wind speed is reported in the range of 70-90 kmph, then train movement will remain normal".

The Delhi Traffic Police on Monday evening had issued an advisory and also alerted the field formations to be ready to handle obstacles such as fallen trees that were removed immediately to avoid traffic chaos. If wind speed is more than 90kmph, then trains will be put oh hold at platforms... no train will enter the platform with a speed of more than 15kmph.

According to reports, following the thunderstorm, there was o power outage in parts of Faridabad and many other places.

Fire and other emergency services, too, have been directed to remain alert.

"The intensity of the thunderstorm would be much lesser".

Notably, the Haryana government had ordered closure of schools on May 7 and 8, with Education Minister Ram Bilas Sharma yesterday saying that the decision had been taken in view of the MeT warning.

In an advisory, the department also said thunderstorms with gusty winds are "very likely" in parts of Himachal Pradesh, east Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Jharkhand. Heavy rain is likely on Tuesday over Tamil Nadu, Kerala and south Karnataka, it said.
