Soros foundation closes office in Hungary over anti-Soros bill

Soros's Open Society Foundations (OSF) organization said it would continue to support human rights work in Hungary as well as projects linked to the arts, media freedom, transparency, education and healthcare, but that it would move its Budapest-based worldwide operations and staff to Germany.

The decision to move operations out of Budapest comes as Hungary prepares to impose the so-called "Stop Soros" package of legislation, which would enact unprecedented restrictions on human rights groups.

Soros, through his Open Society Foundations initiative, has pushed for pro-immigration policies attracting the ire of Orban and his supporters.

In recent years, the fiercely anti-immigration Orban has waged a series of large-scale taxpayer-funded information campaigns attacking Soros, accusing him of being a "public enemy" plotting to change the cultural fabric of Europe. Previously, the Hungarian Prime Minister said that Soros behind mass migration to European countries of North Africa and the Middle East.

"It has become impossible to protect the security of our operations and our staff in Hungary from arbitrary government interference", Gaspard said. The bill was submitted to parliament in February.

Among a host of restrictive measures, it would force NGOs that help migrants to undergo security screening and pay a 25 per cent tax on all foreign funding.

The CEU - which plans to open a satellite campus in Vienna - has agreed a deal with a U.S. college to meet new conditions imposed by Hungary, but the government is yet to approve the agreement. Soros, now 87 and based in the United States, is Jewish. The Hungarian-American made a fortune, but also earned notoriety for shorting Britain's pound sterling, which forced the currency's collapse in the 1990s. The group now has annual expenditures of over $940 million, operates in over 100 countries across the globe, with 26 national and regional foundations and offices.

Since opening his first foundation in Hungary in 1984, the Budapest-born Mr Soros has spent hundreds of millions of euro in the country on everything from photocopiers for independent media, to milk for schoolchildren and a clean-up operation after a 2010 toxic sludge disaster.

The billionaire was once likened to Satan for his calls to bring migrants into Europe, which was perceived by some Hungarian MPs as an attempt to destroy the independence and values of nation-states.

The billionaire also faced accusations of meddling in British politics after news emerged that he donated nearly half a million pounds to a campaign seeking to reverse Brexit.
