Sen. Duckworth tweets baby's potential outfit for historic Senate floor debut

Sen. Duckworth tweets baby's potential outfit for historic Senate floor debut

The US Senate voted unanimously on Wednesday to allow newborn babies of its members to enter the Senate chamber - despite some grumbling by male lawmakers.

Duckworth proposed the new rule to "bring the Senate into the 21st century by recognizing that sometimes new parents also have responsibilities at work".

Duckworth, the Illinois Democrat who this month became the first senator in US history to give birth in office, pushed for the rule change during her pregnancy.

Kaitlin Fahey, Duckworth's chief of staff, explained in a statement given to CNN that the rule change was introduced "to ensure no senator with an infant is prevented from performing their constitutional responsibilities-and send a message that working parents everywhere deserve family-friendly workplace policies".

Other Senators were happy to make the rule change.

Duckworth said she was at her Washington residence when the Senate's top Democrat, Charles Schumer of NY, called to say they needed her to come to the Capitol.

Duckworth, trying out the new rule on the first day, brought her newborn daughter, Maile, to cast a vote against a controversial nominee to head NASA.

Colorado Senator Releases Statement On Marijuana Policy
Huckabee Sanders told reporters on Friday at the White House, adding, "the President is a firm believer" in states' rights. Gardner reacted by blocking nominees for DOJ positions, he said.

The senator was soon surrounded by colleagues cooing at the baby. Klobuchar said babies will be permitted to wear standard infant attire.

It's official: Sen. Tammy Duckworth's baby will be allowed on the Senate floor.

For her part, Duckworth expressed gratitude for a decision that will allow her to effectively do her job while simultaneously balancing her new role as a mother. Her office was cautiously optimistic, bolstered by bipartisan support from the chairman of the Senate Rules Committee, Roy Blunt, a Missouri Republican and Klobuchar, a Duckworth aide said.

"One of the more amusing ones, they said, 'Well why didn't she just vote from the cloakroom?". "We believe strongly, and she did, that it should be a permanent rules change". "One senator told me that he couldn't type, and if I was typing he'd feel compelled to explain to his constituents that he couldn't". Tammy Duckworth's daughter Maile Pearl, born April 9.

Duckworth's fellow Democratic senator from Illinois, Dick Durbin, said babies could be an inspiration to the Senate.

And in the present day, because USA senators have to be physically present to vote from the floor, working from home while nursing an infant is not an option, and taking maternity leave means giving up the right to vote or to sponsor legislation. However, a motion to allow entry for children under the age of one later passed without objection. The discussion, though, she said, "has been going on for weeks".
