Republicans warn of 'blue wave' in November after Rebecca Dallet's win

Republicans warn of 'blue wave' in November after Rebecca Dallet's win

After the Democratic-backed Wisconsin state Supreme Court candidate pulled off a double-digit victory over her GOP rival on Tuesday evening, Gov. Scott Walker warned his state that a "blue wave" of the "Far Left" was imminent in November and encouraged Republicans to "counter it with optimism and organization".

The Supreme Court election has been an expensive and highly partisan race, with Milwaukee Judge Rebecca Dallet backed by liberals and Sauk County Judge Michael Screnock, an appointee of Republican Gov. Scott Walker, favoured by conservatives.

Dallet said via Twitter that she wanted to serve her state in a big way and show her daughters that "it's important to fight with everything we have".

Warning: Scott Walker, who, who is up for re-election in November, tweeted: 'Tonight's results show we are at risk of a #BlueWave in WI'.

Dallet's victory follows a surprising Democratic win in January in a special election for a state Senate seat held by Republicans for 17 years - an outcome that Walker said then was a "wake-up call" for his party.

Dallet, a Milwaukee County judge, drew strong Democratic support including an endorsement from former Vice President Joe Biden.

With the win, she will replace outgoing conservative Justice Michael Gableman, bringing the court's 5-2 conservative majority down to 4-3.

He also said that he will be focusing on his team and his own game in the next period, and will wait to see what is going to happen at the end of the season.

"The candidate with the most experience in our courts and standing up for the fairness of our courts won", Dallet said. She also will become the sixth woman on the court.

Running with a tough-on-crime message, Dallet won by almost a 12-point margin with almost all precincts reporting, over the conservative Screnock, 48, in the first statewide general election in the country this year.

In more good news for Democrats, the party's candidates also won special elections on Tuesday for seats in the Rhode Island Senate and, in an upset, the Massachusetts House of Representatives. "I think people are exhausted of what's been going on in our state in terms of the money coming in to buy these elections and people spoke out tonight".

Scholz said Screnock's loss was due, in part, to what he characterized a "poorly-run" campaign that was slow to get going and to develop their message last summer when Dallet announced her candidacy. That's why Republicans worked so hard to prop up an unqualified candidate who is best known for defending Walker's efforts to gerrymander legislative districts and strip collective bargaining rights from working people.

"People are pretty motivated on the left, from what I can see", said Doug Clawson, 58, a communications professional who cast his ballot at a Madison public library as cold rain fell outside.

"We have taken on the Unions".

Screnock was appointed judge by Walker in 2015. Although candidates technically do not have party affiliation, the state party can work on the candidate's behalf.
