Rallies In Tulsa Supporting Teacher Walkout

Rallies In Tulsa Supporting Teacher Walkout

Oklahoma public school teachers are among the lowest paid in the USA and the state's education system has seen inflation-adjusted general funding per student drop by about 28 precent over the past decade, according to Reuters.

The president of the Oklahoma Education Association said before the walkout can end, lawmakers must pass a bill ending the state's capital gains tax deduction, and the governor must veto the repeal of a hotel-motel tax bill.

In April, lawmakers raised salaries for teachers by an average of $6,100, increased pay for support staff by $1,250, and added $50 million in funding for schools.

Fallin has faced the brunt of criticism from teachers, many of whom blame the term-limited governor for supporting tax cuts and generous state subsidies for businesses that have led to declines in state funding for schools and other state services.

The discussion looks back to past events that featured a similar Oklahoma State Capitol environment, such as the 1990 educator walkout and a 1978 sit-in.

Fallin signed the bill Tuesday as well as two other measures to generate new revenue to help pay for teacher pay raises and public classroom needs.

On Sunday at the First Christian church of Chandler, some of the striking Oklahoma teachers went to a special service.

German court orders Catalan ex-leader's release on bail
The court has been considering what to do about a Spanish extradition request for Mr Puigdemont for more than a week. Sanchez said in a letter from a Madrid jail published Thursday that he was ready to try again to be elected.

Classes remain canceled in Oklahoma's biggest school districts Tuesday as teachers walk out for a seventh day.

He called what is happening "revolutionary" saying he does not remember the last tme so many people came together in Oklahoma for one common cause. "They were not looking forward to the walkout, but it's important".

"When we have the induction program we have an experienced teacher that's part of this program supported by the AEA who's working with the beginning teachers to make sure they're better equipped and supported not only teaching the content but also interpreting the data and working towards student growth", Parker said. "We are ready to fight for our kids for the long haul".

The Legislature approved $2.9 billion for public schools, an increase of almost 20 percent over last year's spending.

Leaders of the Arizona Educators United say they could announce a date for action at any time.

Teachers and supporters were also marching from a number of cities to the Capitol, with some walking more than 100 miles and arriving Monday. "We stand firm, and we've got to have funding for our schools".

But the strike continued, with educators calling for a $10,000 pay increase over three years.
