Oklahoma teachers walk out for 2nd day over for higher pay, funding

Oklahoma teachers walk out for 2nd day over for higher pay, funding

Thousands of teachers rallied at the state Capitol on Monday just days after Gov. Mary Fallin signed legislation increasing taxes on cigarettes, fuel and oil and gas production to provide teachers with raises of about $6,100, or 15 to 18 percent.

The Oklahoma strikes on Monday coincided with a second day of walkouts by several thousand teachers in Kentucky after legislators there passed a bill imposing new limits on the state's underfunding public employee pension system.

The new revenue measures are expected to generate about $450 million, with the bulk going to teacher raises and about $50 million going to general education funding. Smaller govt and lower taxes mean no money to run the state.

Press freedoms are under attack now, more than ever.

Oklahoma City Public Schools announced its campuses would be shut through Tuesday. It has also criticized House and Senate leaders for passing a measure repealing a $5-per-night hotel and motel tax that was part of the original education package. In 2016, the state placed 49th among all states plus the District of Columbia for average teacher salary, according to a National Education Association ranking. On the weekends, she works retail for her mother and consults on the business' webpage.

Steve Moss, athletic director at the high school, was also out supporting the cause.

He said Republicans are hoping the money they put in the budget for education will prevent teacher and voter backlash when lawmakers face voters next November. "I've thought about moving to another state where we might be respected more", McQueary said. The state issued a record number of emergency certifications past year - about 1,200 - to plug a hole in the large number of vacancies created, when a quarter of Oklahoma teachers left for positions in other states or simply quit the profession. In the book, George W. Bush is still president, she said.

Karvelis, a music teacher in Tolleson, Ariz., noticed the lack of funding right away when he arrived in the state to teach two years ago.

She looked down at her creation and tapped the board: "I feel like I have to have a voice for these guys". But that wasn't the only reason she showed up at Monday's rally. I have a Master's degree.

No charges to be filed in Alton Sterling case, according to family
One had been previously involved in the shooting of another black man two years prior that had led to administrative leave. The officers were responding to a report that Sterling was selling CDs and that he allegedly threatened a man with a gun.

"This is just one more dig at public education as a whole, and you're seeing that all across the nation, from West Virginia to Arizona", Stephanie Winkler, president of the Kentucky Education Assn., said at a Monday news conference. "But it's not about my pay".

"It's great that we got a raise, but we need to fund education". It's about not having classroom sizes that are 38 people big that you can't even maneuver around. "We love our kids".

Jill Deutscher brought her two sons who are in seventh-grade to the rally.

But teachers said it was not enough. "This is not spring break 2.0".

Jarvis says he and other OEA members are walking out - and they're planning on staying out, until a plan is passed that teachers are happy with. "Funding for our students is an issue in every schoolhouse in the state of Oklahoma". About 20 percent of Oklahoma's school districts have moved to a four-day week to save costs. "When they pass this with the sewage bill, it tells us exactly what we need to know about what they think of us". Our students are hurting. "The kids deserve better".

Todd Hallman - was among the first in the state to get trained and certified to carry at school.

In Frankfort, Kentucky, teachers and other school employees gathered outside the Kentucky Education Association a couple of blocks from the Capitol, chanting "Stop the war on public education" and held signs that say "We've Had Enough".

Hendricks and her colleagues carpooled from Tahlequah and plan to spend the night so they can rally again Tuesday.
