Malcolm Turnbull loses his 30th consecutive Newspoll

Malcolm Turnbull loses his 30th consecutive Newspoll

Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull's coalition government on Monday lost a 30th straight major opinion poll, a symbolic defeat that intensifies pressure on him after he used the same milestone to oust his predecessor.

Mr Turnbull has also suffered from persistent criticisms by his long-time political foe, Mr Abbott, who remains an MP.

The Newspoll showed the Government is behind Labor on a two-party preferred basis at 48 per cent to 52 per cent, under Mr Turnbull's leadership.

"After the flipping and flopping by Bill Shorten over the Carmichael Mine project, the Central Queensland public are beginning to see the Opposition Leader can not be trusted to keep his word and starting to see the real "Backflip" Bill will cut mining jobs in CQ to save his hide in the trendy inner-city suburbs".

Education Minister Simon Birmingham said it is possible to turn the polls around, citing the recent South Australian election.

The poll, conducted between April 5-8 as Mr Turnbull faced an insurgency from a pro-coal group of Coalition MPs including Mr Abbott, also found voter satisfaction with Mr Turnbull was unchanged from last fortnight. In 87 newspolls I fell behind once.

The start of 2018 was then consumed by then deputy prime minister Barnaby Joyce┬┤s admission that he was expecting a child with a former employee.

Attempting to head off the inevitable bad news and the ensuing leadership speculation, Mr Turnbull has insisted that his move against Mr Abbott was not motivated exclusively by the ruling Liberal-National Coalition's run of bad polls.

Tesla Reaches Model 3 Production Target
The company had planned to be producing 20,000 Model 3s a month by December 2017, but in a disappointing Q4 it shipped only 1,542. First-quarter deliveries totalled 29,980 vehicles, of which 11,730 were Model S and 10,070 were Model X.

"I don't know in what capacity that public life will play out", Mr Abbott told 3AW.

According to Newspoll, he stands one point ahead of Julie Bishop as preferred Liberal leader on 28 per cent, while Mr Abbott (13 per cent) and Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton (9 per cent) find themselves well behind their moderate counterparts. "The work it has been elected to do", Mr Morrison said. It is Mr Turnbull who said that 30 Newspolls is a definition of success.

"If we continue with Mr Abbott as prime minister it is clear enough what will happen".

While most politicians on both sides of the political spectrum tried to dismiss the importance of polls, former prime minister Kevin Rudd went in the opposite direction, referring to his own ousting in 2010 in a tweet.

"If they're going to lose their jobs and you're going to lose government - then, later on, you've got to do the right thing and say: 'Look, I think we have to look at a different way of doing business'".

"I regret making those remarks at the time, making remarks about 30 Newspolls at the time", he said today.

On Monday, Mr Abbott will ride through the Latrobe Valley, including past the mothballed Hazelwood power station, and will meet workers and electricity companies as part of his pro-coal push.

Mr Rudd wrote that both Mr Turnbull and Mr Shorten would be "long gone" if the same standards had been applied to them.
