Lady Commanders win three straight at home

Lady Commanders win three straight at home

With spring break in effect for Jefferson County students, many local baseball and softball teams hit the road for some fun in the sun.

The club plays a doubles format with partners changing throughout the 15-game evening.

Below is a roundup of local baseball/softball coverage from this week.

Mary Rocheleau's three goals sparked York past Heritage 8-0.

In the first game, NIACC tied the game with a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh innings. Caroline Quigley went 2-of-3 with a run and an RBI.

Stockton baseball: The Ospreys (2-9) were swept at Swarthmore College, falling 6-0 and 10-0, managing just five hits in 14 innings, two by John Perrino. Long had a 2-of-3 night with a double.

After Warner went ahead 4-3 in the ninth with an RBI-hit up the middle with two outs and while facing an 0-2 count, the Warriors answered in the bottom half with an RBI-hit to deep center by Riggleman to scoreKylee Crews. Rachel Williams lasted four innings in the circle and struck out six batters. The day started with an 11-6 win over Handley. They also, for the most part, stayed in the win column.

The bats were hot for Mill Valley from the get-go in Game 1. Bello scored the Rams' final run of the game in the final frame when senior Kyle McMullen forced a throw at second base to allow the fifth and final run for Dixon.

Grassfield overcame Woodside 7-1.

On the mound, Nathan Shepard struck out three Tivy batters across nearly six innings, allowing three runs on four hit while walking two.

NCAA Tournament: Kansas holds off Clemson; Villanova victorious
The Tigers also needed a productive game from Elijah Thomas but he finished with four points and eight rebounds in 27 minutes. The teams went back and forth, trading alley-oop dunks and three-pointers until the end-game played out with 21 seconds left.

Junior Kallista Leonardos-one of the top offensive threats on the team since she stepped foot on campus with a.353/.414/.668 slash line and 22 home runs over her career-stressed that they can not let up and must continue their hot start to 2018.

In the second game, Sommer Kisling had two RBIs and fell a home run short of hitting for the cycle.

FAU is in the middle of the conference with a 17-8 season record and 3-3 league mark. Oakley had a hit and an RBI. It seemed that the team was finally getting back into their groove. Freshman outfielder Chelsey Battise scored a run and sophomore JoJo Cowsert struck out three.

Hampton defeated Bethel 4-2. However, if the team's 12-8 record has anything to say, wins should be coming again shortly. Fernandez pitched three scoreless innings in relief, striking out seven.

With seven shutouts so far this season, Smith is the nation's top senior in that department. His offense pulled away in the third inning when 10 runs poured in, essentially ending the contest. Loyola drew back-to-back-to-back walks the following inning. Cumberland won Friday 6-1. Marshfield mustered only the one run on two hits (both singles) with a walk and six strikeouts. Jessica Rybicki also had two RBIs, and Whitman smacked a triple.

Brayden Rowe led the way in a 9-4 win over J.B. Pennington, swinging in four runs for the Yellow Jackets.

Shelby Kingston, Keillani Rebollo and Shelby Aguilar hit hits for the Patriots (1-3).

Jess Garcia and Ava Bredwell both went 2 for 4 at the plate. Troup is now 5-10 overall, 1-2 in district.

Stockton next plays Tuesday in Reading, Pennsylvania, against unbeaten Alvernia (11-0-1) in a doubleheader.
