'I don't know how they sleep' - Vicky blasts cancer docs

The National Association of General Practitioners welcomed the call for re-tests, saying "it is extremely important that this is available for any patient who is anxious and wants to have repeat test for reassurance".

They say any woman who may have not been told that her case has been audited has been informed - or will be informed after the weekend.

THE CLINICAL DIRECTOR of Cervical Check, Dr Gráinne Flannelly has informed the HSE that she is to stand aside from her position.

Her resignation comes after it was revealed that 206 women were wrongly diagnosed following routine smear tests.

"I have chose to step aside to allow the programme to continue it's important work", she said.

According to the HSE, nearly 1,500 cases of cervical cancer have been notified to the cervical screening programme, CervicalCheck, since it began a decade ago.

Dr Flannelly said she had made a decision to step aside to allow the service continue its important work.

Prince William hints at the royal baby name

Minister for Health Simon Harris has now established a review of the process, to establish how the scandal was allowed to unfold. It said it "considered essential that the remainder of the Leadership team of the CervicalCheck Programme remain in situ".

SIMON Coveney has apologised to Limerick woman Vicky Phelan over her cancer misdiagnoses in what he called a "a shameful series of events".

During the week, the Fine Gael TD announced that he is now organising for repeat smear tests to be arranged free of charge following the recent news that several cases of cervical cancer have gone misdiagnosed.

Earlier the Minister Harris said he had lost confidence in senior management in CervicalCheck.

An audit of the files of 1,452 cervical cancer patients by CervicalCheck, Ireland's screening programme, found 206 cases of women who were given negative results from smear tests, suggesting they did not have cancer.

THE MOTHER OF TWO appeared on Saturday's Ray D'Arcy show to tell her heartbreaking story of a delayed cervical cancer diagnosis.

This week Mrs Phelan was awarded €2.5 million from the high Court, which she said would go towards making her final days more comfortable for her and her two young children.
