Hurricane names Harvey, Irma and Maria officially 'retired'

When a storm name is retired from the Atlantic's list of names, member countries of the meteorological organization from that region select a new name.

Good riddance, Harvey, Irma, Maria and Nate. The 2005 hurricane season has the most retired names (five) for one season.

Names that are not retired get reused every six years.

The new names? Harold, Idalia, Margot, and Nigel.

The meteorological organization retired the four names from its rotating list used for hurricanes and tropical storms in light of the death and destruction the storms caused. They're calling for 14 named storms and seven of those are expected to become hurricanes.

It made another landfall in Cuba as a Category 5 storm and went on to strike Florida twice.

The 2018 Atlantic hurricane season starts June 1 and runs through November 30.

The discount allowed the team to re-sign Shaun Livingston and Andre Iguodala, something general manager Bob Myers appreciated. Durant finished the regular season with the Warriors on Tuesday night after a heavy 119-79 loss to the Utah Jazz .

Hurricane Harvey kicked off the season in late August.

Maria caused an estimated $90 billion in damage in the USA, according to the hurricane center, making it the third-costliest US storm on record behind Katrina and Harvey.

The last names dropped from the list were 2016 storms: Matthew and Otto. If a hurricane is particularly deadly or costly, then its name is retired and replaced by a different name. Officials said at least 44 people died from the direct effects of Irma as a result of its "strong winds, heavy rain and high surf".

Hurricane Irma was a long-lived hurricane that reached category 5 intensity on September 5.

It struck the Caribbean island of Dominica at Category 5 intensity and caused catastrophic damage. Puerto Rico struggled to restore water and power to its residents in the wake of Hurricane Maria.

The idea of permanently retiring names began after the 1954 hurricane season when Carol, Edna and Hazel ravaged the East Coast. Maria caused 31 direct deaths with 34 missing in Dominica, and two direct deaths in Guadeloupe.

The hurricanes killed hundreds of people, caused more than $200 billion in damage and brought misery and hardship to millions of Americans.
