Google should not be in the business of war: Google employees

The employees have been circulating a letter within the company that demands Google CEO Sundar Pichai pull the plug on the effort.

In 2016, he was named the head of a new combined division at Google, pairing its powerful search unit and artificial intelligence divisions, after Amit Singhal, Google's longtime search czar, left.

In recent weeks, however, Apple has accelerated hiring for Siri, peaking with 161 openings posted in one day in March - and now Giannandrea's hiring, first reported by the New York Times.

According to a blog posting from Urs Hölzle, Google's senior vice president for technical infrastructure, Google has officially met its goal. The letter even invokes Google's "Don't Be Evil" motto.

Google itself has described its work on the project as involving only non-offensive uses of AI. Last month, Gizmodo broke the news that the company would be lending AI TensorFlow programming kits to the Pentagon's Maven, and sources say that employees were outraged that the government would use the technology to improve drone operations.

A machine learning expert, John Giannandrea devised technologies that helped AI shape the way various Google services came to evolve over time.

The event will run from April 10 through 30, and pit you and three friends up against omnics running rampant through London. So far, it's unclear if the event will be exactly the same as the previous year.

Historically, Apple also had a much more limited access to user data than Google or Facebook due its corporate investment in privacy.

"Our technology must be infused with the values we all hold dear", Mr. Cook said Tuesday morning in an email to staff members obtained by The New York Times.

The existence of the system was revealed in early March this year, with Google grudgingly confirming that the DoD system was indeed using its TensorFlow technology. The project uses Google's TensorFlow software and image-recognition algorithms to scan through millions of hours of drone footage collected by the military and use the information to identify people and objects of interest.

"We believe that Google should not be in the business of war", wrote the employees.

It added that the U.S. military is using "open-source object recognition software available to any Google Cloud customer". "The models are based on unclassified data only".
