Gold medalist sues USA Gymnastics, Michigan State

McKayla Maroney appears on The Today Show to talk about Larry Nassar abuse on April 18, 2018.

USA Gymnastics responded to Maroney's comments in a statement to NBC News and praised her courage for speaking out. Two-time Olympic medal winning gymnast McKayla Maroney says she has questioned whether she paid too high of a price for her success.

Maroney pointed to personnel overhauls at USA Gymnastics, Michigan State and the USOC as signs of progress, though much work remains to be done. She also chastised Michigan State officials who she said have turned victims away and are "still refusing to admit what the problem is and that they're accountable for it".

Wieber, 22, filed the suit in Los Angeles, where she now lives.

"I further came to learn that he had been quietly dismissed by USA Gymnastics based upon allegations that he had sexually abused minors on our Olympic and National Women's Gymnastics Teams", she said.

In addition to Maroney, Aly Raisman, Gabby Douglas, Simone Biles and Jordyn Wieber are among the gymnasts who said Nassar abused them.

In December, 2016 she reached a settlement with USA Gymnastics after suffering "years of psychological trauma". "Learning from everything that's come out, I never should have met him".

"He was allowed to treat us in hotel rooms alone and without any supervision. And I didn't believe that they would understand".

"Nobody was protecting us from being taken advantage of".

Her attorney, John Manly, said she had been abused between 50 and 100 times by Nassar, including at the Olympics and during the world championships. I could not look at them any longer and stay quiet. She filed a lawsuit in California Tuesday alleging that Michigan State and former USA Gymnastics leaders hid Nassar's criminal conduct from the public and law enforcement.

Authorities say Nassar victimized more than 260 women, including several of Maroney's Olympic team mates.
