Facebook users still waiting on privacy scandal notices

Facebook users still waiting on privacy scandal notices

The crisis stems from revelations that Cambridge Analytica, a data-mining firm connected to President Donald Trump's successful 2016 campaign, had exploited weaknesses in Facebook's privacy controls to collect personal information about 87 million people without their consent.

On Friday, Facebook sought to quell some concerns over political manipulation of its platform by announcing support for the "Honest Ads Act" that requires election ad buyers to be identified, and to go further with verification of sponsors of ads on key public policy issues.

When Mark Zuckerberg appears Tuesday afternoon before members of two Senate committees, it will be the culmination of a Facebook public relations blitz in the face of a series of controversies that have tarnished the reputation of the world's largest social network. The users who took the test shared the data of their Facebook friends with the app and Kogan later sold it to Cambridge Analytica, a voter profiling company in the UK.

The House Energy and Commerce Committee on Monday released Zuckerberg's prepared statements, which he will echo on Wednesday after attending the Senate Judiciary Committee on Tuesday.

Around 87 million users of the social network are expected to receive a message to their Facebook accounts alerting them to whether their data was misused by the firm.

A senior Senate GOP aide helping organize the joint Senate Judiciary Committee and Senate Commerce Committee hearing told Breitbart News that it is standard practice not to swear witnesses like this in under oath.

Facebook hired several outside consultants to help coach Zuckerberg, even holding mock sessions to prepare him for questions from lawmakers.

Embroiled in a massive data breach following the Cambridge Analytica scandal, Facebook had said data on about 87 million people - mostly in the U.S. - may have been improperly shared with Cambridge Analytica.

Judge hands down first sentence in Mueller probe
Van der Zwaan was contrite at his sentencing hearing in federal court in Washington , DC. He had asked to be home in London by August for the birth of his first child.

By flooding the zone with product fixes and executive interviews, Facebook has effectively armed Zuckerberg with more convincing talking points to use when he gets grilled by Congress.

Zuckerberg will try to reverse the backlash against the company when he opens two days of testimony in Congress. "It was my mistake, and I'm sorry". That's why I've asked Chairman Thune to haul Cambridge Analytica in to answer these questions at a separate hearing.

The transcript says Facebook "detected and dealt with" several threats with ties to Russia, including activity by a group called APT28, which the USA government says has links to Russian military intelligence.

The allegations tying Facebook to the illegal trafficking of wildlife are surfacing while the company is already scrambling to recover from a privacy scandal that has wiped out $79 billion in shareholder wealth during the past three weeks.

He will also likely face questions about ads and posts placed by Russian operatives, in what US authorities believe was an attempt to influence the USA 2016 election. Facebook shares were up 1.7 percent in afternoon trading. "It will take some time to work through all of the changes we need to make, but Im committed to getting it right", the Facebook CEO said.

"And Facebook keeps saying its an idealistic company".

"It's not enough to just connect people, we have to make sure those connections are positive", Zuckerberg plans to say in his testimony.

In the testimony, Zuckerberg acknowledges that the questioning will likely be critical.
