Cricket Australia to sign broadcast deal with Seven and Foxtel

Cricket Australia to sign broadcast deal with Seven and Foxtel

The deal would be a massive coup for Seven after it recently lost its domestic tennis rights to Nine for $300 million over five years.

The headquarters of media broadcaster/publisher Seven West Media in Sydney, Australia February 14, 2017.

The pay TV channel will also screen 13 domestic one-day games, the Sheffield Shield final and some tour matches.

Cricket Australia chief executive James Sutherland insists the revolutionary shift of limited-overs internationals behind a television paywall will benefit the sport in the long-term.

The two networks with air the women's global matches and 23 women's Big Bash League (WBBL) matches, while Cricket Australia will live stream the remaining WBBL matches on cricket.com.au and the CA Live App.

In doing so, it replaces Seven, which has been Australia's premier tennis broadcaster for more than four decades.

It is unclear at this stage how much each party is paying for cricket rights, but reports suggest Foxtel is underwriting a large proportion of the six-year package.

Fox Sports will exclusively showcase home worldwide one-day and Twenty20 matches, along with the remaining 16 games of the BBL on a new dedicated cricket channel during summer.

The deal also includes a new partnership between Fox Sports and Cricket Network, CA's digital arm.

National Basketball Association playoffs 2018: Predictions, picks for Warriors vs. Spurs first-round series
The discount allowed the team to re-sign Shaun Livingston and Andre Iguodala, something general manager Bob Myers appreciated. Durant finished the regular season with the Warriors on Tuesday night after a heavy 119-79 loss to the Utah Jazz .

Foxtel chief executive Patrick Delany said a "very small amount" of cricket would be on pay-TV only and promised to "do for cricket [now] what we've done for cricket in 2011 when we invented the Big Bash League".

"Our honest thanks also to Network Ten for their role in taking the Big Bash League to a new level, and for so willingly providing a platform to launch and grow the Women's Big Bash League. As a startup League, the BBL is a phenomenal success story", Sutherland said.

"We have nothing but gratitude and respect for Nine and Ten - and sincerely thank them for their contribution to our sport".

"What we are particularly proud of in this partnership is the focus on extending our broadcast coverage of women's matches".

"I am excited about having Australia's only truly national game back on Seven", Seven West Media chairman Kerry Stokes said.

Cricket Australia have experimented with live streaming in the past, but now its Prime Time, with Foxtel's Now streaming service providing access over the internet to Cricket lovers across the country. We will give fans the most compelling, entertaining and innovative coverage of cricket with more choices, more games, more programs.

Another interesting sub plot will be to see the impact reducing the number of Big Bash League games on FTA television could have BBL attendances, which is among the top 10 most attended sports competitions in the world. We know Australians love and respect cricket and so do we.

Seven Network as part of the deal will show men's Tests, women's internationals, 43 BBL games, 23 WBBL games, AB & BC Medal Night.

AdNews will keep track of cricket rights develops as they unfold today.
