Colorado Senator Releases Statement On Marijuana Policy

Colorado Senator Releases Statement On Marijuana Policy

Colorado Republican Senator Cory Gardner said that as a result of Trump's assurances, he'll end a blockade of the administration's Justice Department nominees.

"We applaud this commitment from President Trump, who promised during his campaign to take a federalist approach with regard to marijuana policy", Altieri said in a statement.

"Since the campaign, President Trump has consistently supported states' rights to decide for themselves how best to approach marijuana". Gardner reacted by blocking nominees for DOJ positions, he said.

This story is developing and will be updated.

Sessions on January 4 rescinded a policy begun under Democratic former President Barack Obama that had eased enforcement of federal marijuana laws in states that legalized it.

The announcement has potential implications for all states with or considering legalized marijuana, as Trump also said he would support legislative solutions to solidifying cannabis policy as a state-by-state issue, not a federal one.

"Because of these commitments, I have informed the Administration that I will be lifting my remaining holds on Department of Justice nominees", Gardner said.

He added that Facebook is cooperating with the special counsel investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election. Earlier this week, Facebook began notifying millions of users that their personal data had been compromised.

Angry that USAG Sessions had reneged on his pledge to leave marijuana states alone, Senator Gardner promised to block all DOJ nominations, pending a resolution. Under Mr. Sessions's approach, USA attorneys in states where pot is legal were given approval to prosecute cases where they see fit.

"The President did speak with Senator Gardner yesterday and again today", Ms. Huckabee Sanders told reporters on Friday at the White House, adding, "the President is a firm believer" in states' rights.

The January memo from Sessions stated that prosecutors should use their discretion in weighing whether charges were warranted, rather than abiding by the Obama-era guidance.

The Washington Post first reported the agreement with the White House.

"The people of MA have voted to make marijuana legal under state law and the Cannabis Control Commission has been given the authority to establish a strong regulatory system that ensures public safety and allows for responsible sale and use of marijuana products", she said in a statement.

Separately, former House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, announced this week that he was joining the board of directors for a cannabis company and engaged in efforts to allow veterans to access marijuana for medicinal use.
