Chemical weapons inspectors allowed to visit Douma

Chemical weapons inspectors allowed to visit Douma

The report comes a few days after the U.S., Britain and France conducted airstrikes targeting alleged chemical weapons facilities in Syria, in retaliation for a suspected chemical weapons attack that they blamed on the Syrian government.

U.S. Ambassador Kenneth Ward on Monday said at an OPCW meeting in The Hague that Russian Federation may have tampered with the evidence.

U.S. President Donald Trump is still willing to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin in spite of increasing tensions between the United States and Russia, White House Spokesperson, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, said on Tuesday. A Pentagon spokeswoman said there was no U.S. military activity in the area.

On Monday, Syrian and Russian authorities prevented investigators from the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons from going to the scene, the head of the OPCW said, blocking worldwide efforts to establish what happened and who was to blame.

Less than two days later, the Army of Islam rebels surrendered the town, which was the last stronghold in the once rebellious eastern Ghouta region at the doorstep of Damascus.

The purported chemical incident in Douma allegedly took place on April 7.

The alleged gas attack, which Syrian activists say killed more than 40 people, prompted punitive US, British and French airstrikes. "It is right that Parliament has the power to support or stop the government from taking planned military action", he said.

But "strangers entered as we were in a state of chaos and spread a rumour among people there had been a chemical attack, and people became alarmed".

"This Is Not Normal": James Comey Responds to Trump's Jail Threat
Comey said it was possible, too, that the Russians might have material that could be used to blackmail Trump . He also spoke at length about his complicated relationship with former attorney general Loretta Lynch.

The alleged attack and subsequent military response underscored the challenge that the seven-year conflict in Syria poses for the West. President Donald Trump wants to remove USA troops from Syria, where it has been fighting the Islamic State militants.

"On Wednesday is when we plan the arrival of the OPCW experts", he added at a press conference in the Russian embassy in The Hague. But it said no missiles landed inside the bases.

Russian Federation and Syria had cited "pending security issues to be worked out" while inspectors from the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons were denied access to the site of the alleged attack, said Ahmet Uzumcu, the director general of the OPCW.

Earlier this month, four Iranian military personnel were killed in an airstrike on Syria's T4 air base, also in Homs.

Lavrov also repeated Russia's claim that there was no chemical attack in Douma, asserting that "what did take place was.staged". Israel did not confirm or deny it. Government forces and Russian troops have been deployed in Douma, which is now controlled by the Syrian government.

The Kremlin also denied that Russian Federation was not allowing the OPCW mission in.

The Russian military later said that it will help secure the visit of global chemical weapons inspectors to the site of the alleged attack.

The United States and its allies have said the aim of the strikes was to prevent the further use of chemical weapons, not to turn the tide of the war in Syria or topple Assad.
