Algerian radio says over 100 dead in plane crash

On Wednesday morning, a plane crash involving a military transport aircraft reportedly killed 257 people, including ten crew members.

The unfortunate incident happened at the Boufarik military airport, an air force base near the capital, Algiers.

Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika declared three days of national mourning over the crash starting yesterday.

The Il-76 has been involved in a number of crashes, most recently in 2016 when one on a firefighting mission crashed near Lake Baikal in north-east Siberia, killing all 10 crew members on board.

Twenty-six members of polisario front, supported by Algeria and seeking independence from morocco for Western Sahara, are among the dead.

In February of that year, another Algerian military transport plane, an American-built C-130 Hercules turboprop carrying at least 78 people, crashed in mountainous terrain in the northeastern province of Oum El Bouaghi. According to family and friends who knew them, the crash killed Mariah Coogan, 23, Anand Patel, 26, Helena Lagos, 22, and James Pedroza, 28, as well as two others who have yet to be identified. An unidentified man lying in a hospital was quoted by AP as saying, "The plane started to rise before falling", adding, "The plane crashed on its wing first and caught fire".

Passengers from Western Sahara, a disputed territory annexed by Morocco after Spain withdrew in 1975, were among the fatalities. Pro-Russian rebels are widely accused of shooting the plane down using a surface-to-air missile but they deny responsibility.

As a jet comes in for a landing at Scottsdale Airport, authorities park on a golf course near the site of a plane crash that killed several people Tuesday, April 10, 2018, in Scottsdale, Ariz. The Defence Ministry also issued a statement expressing condolences to families of the victims. There was a single survivor.
