Trailblazing US Congresswoman Louise Slaughter Dies At 88

She would serve in local and state politics in the Empire State before being elected to the U.S. House in 1986.

Slaughter, the first woman to chair the House Committee on Rules and co-chair of the Pro-Choice Caucus, was a key figure in passing the ACA.

Slaughter fell at her Washington, DC residence last week and was taken to George Washington University Hospital to receive treatment and monitoring for a concussion. She is one of the longest-serving Democrats in Congress. Throughout her tenure in Congress, Slaughter was best known as one of the original authors of 1994's Violence Against Women Act.

After House Rules ranking member Louise Slaughter's death, Rep. The announcement of her death came just a day after Fitzsimmons backed Slaughter to make a recovery, calling her as "tough as nails".

Slaughter received her Bachelor of Science degree in Microbiology and a Master of Science degree in Public Health from the University of Kentucky.

"Her strong example inspired countless young women to know their power, and seek their rightful place at the head of the decision-making table", Pelosi said. Slaughter and her late husband, Robert, moved to Fairport, a suburb of Rochester, N.Y., in the 1950s, where they remained for the rest of their lives. Louise was a fighter, a trailblazer, a role model, and someone I am so very proud to have called my friend.

Pelosi Statement on the Passing of Congresswoman Louise Slaughter - Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi

"I'm sending condolences to Congresswoman Slaughter's family and loved ones from all of us here - this is a huge loss of a truly kind and fierce woman", Democratic National Committee chairman Tom Perez tweeted.

At the end of February, Slaughter launched her reelection campaign for a 17th term in office.

Slaughter, a Democrat born in Kentucky, had served in the House since 1987, winning 16 elections in New York's 25th district.

"As the first female Chairwoman of our Committee she was a force to be reckoned with who always brought her spunk, fire, and dynamic leadership to every meeting", Sessions wrote. Redistricting in 2012 dramatically altered Slaughter's district, fueling speculation that she might retire.

Her legislative accomplishments include co-authoring the Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act (GINA), which passed in 2008, and prohibits individuals from genetic discrimination in health insurance and employment. "Throughout her entire career, Louise worked with people from so many different philosophies and backgrounds, because she was such a genuine human spirit".
