Toyota halts self-driving vehicle tests after Uber-related death

In a survey by J.D. Power and Associates and Detroit-based law firm Miller, Canfield, Paddock and Stone PLC released Wednesday, 46 percent of the 1,500 respondents said they "definitely" or "probably" would not ride in a fully self driving auto - a vehicle without a driver, steering wheel or gas pedals. Moreover, the respondents who are skittish about self-driving technology largely weren't swayed reassurance that the vehicles would meet federal safety standards, with 78 percent of those respondents saying they still wouldn't ride in an autonomous vehicle. Arizona's self-driving vehicle oversight committee has not planned any meetings or actions, he said.

The police department's preliminary investigation showed that the Uber vehicle, operated by 44-year-old Rafael Vasquez, was traveling at approximately 40 miles per hour at the time of the accident and did not attempt to slow down, according to Elcock.

In a statement, Tempe mayor Mark Mitchell said the crash was "tragic" and the community grieves for Herzberg. Volvo confirmed that its vehicle was involved in the crash but the software controlling the SUV was not its own.

Automakers and tech companies are evaluating whether or not to suspend their autonomous vehicle programs in the wake of the first fatality involving a self-driving vehicle. Herzberg was walking a bicycle from one side of the road to the other when the accident occurred, and Elcock noted that she was "outside of the crosswalk".

Uber had been ferrying customers in self-driving cars in limited parts of Tempe and Scottsdale during their self-driving trial, the Republic said.

Until now, most litigation over non-fatal accidents involving self-driving vehicles has been confidentially settled, according to legal experts. All indications we have had in the past show that traffic laws are being obeyed by the companies testing here.

Investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board are in Tempe this week to collect information on the collision.

Activision may contribute to the battle royale craze
If you are attempting to sign up for Fornite Mobile , or sign in on PSN, XBox or mobile, you probably will not be successful. There are widespread reports across YouTube, Reddit and Epic Games' forums saying that an iPhone 6 will not work.

Vehicle accident litigation usually turns on whether a driver acted negligently, or failed to exercise a reasonable level of care.

One question that would likely arise in litigation is whether Uber, Volvo or any companies that supplied self-driving technology entered into indemnification agreements, in which an entity assumes another company's liability costs.

Companies say testing these self-driving cars on public roads is vital to allow the systems to gather data and adapt to real-world situations.

A spokesman for the CPUC declined to comment on the details of the proposal or its regulatory implications.

Jennifer Dukarski, a Detroit-based lawyer representing suppliers of autonomous-vehicle technology, said the lawsuit filed by the San Francisco motorcyclist against GM raised only negligence claims.

The Tempe police department said in a brief statement it "would like to reaffirm that fault has not been determined in this case".
