Stephen Hawking cameos that made pop culture history

Stephen Hawking cameos that made pop culture history

The head of the Vatican's astronomical observatory has hailed Stephen Hawking as a scientist who gave a "human face" to astronomy.

Hawking himself found recognition from the Catholic Church, being named a member of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences. Or Hawking's distinctive voice opening Pink Floyd's trippy track "Keep Talking" with a spoken nugget of scientific wisdom?

Sometimes it feels like science is losing ground in the modern world, but people still look to the stars for answers about who we are and how we come to be here. The 26-year-old has been out of action with an ankle ligament injury and has been forced to wear a protective boot in his recovery.

In Hawking's case, he was diagnosed at the age of 21, when he was told he probably had about two years to live.

In that time he earned a place at Oxford University to read science before going on to complete his PhD in cosmology at Cambridge before the onset of his illness spurred him to some of the greatest works in his field.

In a statement, his children Lucy, Robert and Tim called him "a great scientist and an extraordinary man whose work and legacy will live on for many years".

The Big Bang Theory is a show that revolves around the lives of 4 nerdy scientists - 3 of whom are physicists - so of course it had to have several appearances by Hawking.

After his second marriage ended, Hawking and Jane rekindled their friendship and appeared together to promote "The Theory of Everything", a movie about Hawking's life based on her personal memoir, "Travelling to Infinity: My Life with Stephen". He may not have been the greatest physicist of all time and did not get the Nobel Prize.

City Councilwoman Marielle Franco Killed by Gunshots in Rio de Janeiro
Legendary Brazilian singer Elza Soares, who is black , tweeted that this was "one of the few times when I can't find my voice". For years, the Mare has been wracked by wars between narco-trafficking gangs and often heavy handed interventions by police.

Even the cast of "The Big Bang Theory" mourned the death of the modern-day scientist.

The Motor Neurone Disease (MND) Association, the United Kingdom equivalent of the ALS Association, noted on Wednesday that Hawking's life was inspiring to the large number of people who have also lived with the disease.

Stephen Hawking, the author of "A Brief History of Time", had a remarkable gift for timing. He was first to show the world that black holes can disappear.

Hawking also proposed that black holes should emit heat and eventually pop out of existence - a process that for miniature black holes would result in an explosion that equalled the energy of a million one-megaton hydrogen bombs.

In the 1970s, Hawking considered whether the particles and light that enter a black hole were ultimately destroyed if the black hole evaporated. But the U.S. physicist Leonard Susskind disagreed.

Hawking has often been compared to Albert Einstein, who did win a Nobel Prize.

It was Hawking's famed sense of humour that helped make him accessible to the average person.

The charity said it had seen such an "influx of donations" following the announcement of Prof Hawking's death that its website had crashed.
