Rights group slams Israeli court system over Tamimi's conviction

Ahed Tamimi accepted a plea deal on Wednesday under which she will be sentenced to eight months in prison, the teenage Palestinian girl was filmed kicking and slapping an Israeli soldier in the occupied West Bank.

"The fact that a child will be jailed for 8 months for slapping a soldier whose troops just shot her 15 year old cousin in the face is extreme, but in the context of the 99% conviction rate in the Israeli military court system and right-wing incitement against Ahed, this compromise by the Israeli military shows they have made a decision to back down in the face of growing pressure to release Ahed", the statement said.

In this file photo taken on May 26, 2017 Palestinian Ahed Tamimi (R) reacts in front of Israeli forces during a demonstration on May 26, 2017, in the village of Nabi Saleh, north of Ramallah, in the Israeli-occupied West Bank.

Tamimi's sentence in the agreement includes time served and a fine of 5,000 shekels ($1,430, 1,166 euros), said her lawyer Gaby Lasky, meaning she is to be released in the summer.

Was it a reluctance to acknowledge that their oh so innocent and heroic Palestinian icon had actually admitted to the aggravated assault of an IDF soldier, incitement to violence and disrupting soldiers on two other occasions?

The judge agreed to a similar plea deal for Tamimi's mother Nariman, who has been charged with incitement.

Nour el-Tamimi was sentenced to serve 16 days in prison and a fine 2,000 shekel ($US 575).

Then, days later, the airline sent a German Shepard that was supposed to go to Kansas was sent to Japan. Prosecutors in Houston are investigating to determine if criminal charges are warranted, AP said.

Tamimi's family says she was upset because a 15-year-old cousin had earlier been seriously wounded in clashes with Israeli troops. She was arrested shortly after the incident in a night raid on her home. The Israeli soldiers reacted by moving slowly away and Tamimi's mother is then seen intervening.

Eshteiwi stated that the Palestinians will continue to protest the ongoing illegal Israeli occupation, its colonies and Annexation Wall, and will fight for their legitimate rights, until liberation and independence, and establishing a sovereign Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital.

Demonstrators hold a banner reading "Free Ahed Tamimi" refering to the Palestinian teenager jailed in Israel, in Paris on March 8, 2018 during a demonstration called by feminists association to mark International Women's Day. She can be the megaphone of the hundreds of Palestinian children who remain locked up with little attention paid to them.

Tamimi's trial began on February 13 behind closed doors at the Israeli military court in the West Bank.

According to worldwide human rights law, the detention of children should only be a measure of last resort and for the least time possible.

Clashes erupted after Friday prayers when Palestinians staged demonstrations against the Israeli occupation and the US recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital.
