Google Bets Big on Digital News

Google Bets Big on Digital News

"In the blog post, Google announced their new "Google News Initiative" (GNI), a project devoted to curbing the spread of misinformation online by "[elevating and strengthening] quality journalism", "[evolving] business models to drive sustainable growth" and "[empowering] news organizations" through technological innovation. The company launched the Google News Initiative (GNI), a $300 million project that will look to "elevate and strengthen quality journalism" among other things.

Google today announced a multi-pronged News Initiative, which Chief Business Officer Phillipp Schindler described as a way to tie together all the company's efforts to work with the journalism industry.

"It's becoming increasingly hard to distinguish what's true and what's not online".

We need to do more.

Google is only too aware - the 2016 presidential election in the United States being a case in point - that certain events and types of news are more liable to spin than others.

Also of note: The Shorenstein Center here at Harvard is building out a Disinformation Lab, modeled after some of the work First Draft News has done in the United Kingdom and France around collaborative, country-wide fact-checking for elections. "We've trained our systems to recognize these events and adjust our signals toward more authoritative content", Google said.

Samsung Galaxy S10 to Add iPhone X-esque 3D Facial Recognition
This appears to be a step in the right direction, though, and should lead to a little more convenience for clumsy Galaxy fans. Currently, uBreakiFix has more than 300 locations, but that's expected to expand by almost 200 more by early 2019.

Japanese newspaper house The Mainichi has been named as the only Asian launch partner in Subscribe with Google, one of the key plans in the Google News Initiative launched overnight.

He added: "We're also deepening our commitment to building products that address the news industry's most urgent needs".

Google said it will take a cut of the revenue from the subscriptions generated through its feature, but. The publishers are spread across 18 countries and include prominent media organisations such as the Financial Times, Washington Post, New York Times, Telegraph, Le Parisien and Reforma. Mashable partnered with Google during the development of AMP Stories. Unlike the search results for similar previous shootings, which surfaced stories from hoax websites and toxic message boards, the results on both Google and YouTube for topics related to the Maryland shooting were dominated by stories from legitimate mainstream publications.

Google has been previously viewed as an enemy to the industry, but publishers are warming to the tech platform with Fairfax even inking a deal with Google a year ago.

Also helping to achieve this goal is a new open-source tool called "The Outline" that'll allow news organizations to easily create their own VPN for securely sharing sensitive data across the internet.

"We think that having to log in once can improve the user experiences in a small but important way", said Bonita Stewart, VP of global partnerships.
