Zuma's fate to be decided today

Zuma's fate to be decided today

South African President Jacob Zuma should step down, a senior ruling African National Congress official said, raising fresh pressure on Zuma who has been weakened since Cyril Ramaphosa became ANC leader in December. Zuma's second and final term as president is due to end in mid-2019.

Zuma faces a no-confidence vote on February 22 after a request from the opposition Economic Freedom Fighters but Mashatile said he opposed that method of removing the president.

On Friday, parliament speaker Baleka Mbete agreed to a request from the opposition Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) for a motion of no-confidence, though she refused to hold the vote before the president's state of the nation address on February 8, and scheduled it for February 22. However, cracks began to show in the top six leadership as ANC secretary-general Ace Magashule, a staunch Zuma supporter, told eNCA on Saturday that Zuma will deliver the Sona.

The report stated that ANC deputy president David Mabuza will lead a delegation to Zuma's official residence in Pretoria.

"They are saying as the ANC top six it would be ideal to deal with it before he faces a vote of no confidence". Although Zuma retains the support of a faction within the ANC, he no longer holds a top post.

The president has been beset by a series of corruption allegations but denies any wrongdoing.

Zuma has been deserted by many party members after his position was taken over by Ramaphosa, who has been lobbying to force him to resign.

Until Zuma was recalled from office, action against state capture would be limited, and talk about eradicating corruption would remain hollow, and somewhat meaningless, FutureSA said.

According to the local IOL news website, party chairman Gwede Mantashe told worshippers at a church east of Johannesburg that they were meeting Zuma to consider options regarding his future as president of the country. This comes as a motion of no confidence hangs over Zuma's head.

"Zuma might want to take his chances with the motion and see how many ANC members will come to vote with the opposition and those that would still vote to support him", Mnguni said.
