Today's quake in England and Wales: Massive for British standards

It said the tremor was 4.4 magnitude and originated 20km north of Swansea, in Wales, just after 2.30pm on Saturday.

A BBC weatherman claimed early indications state a 4.7 quake was recorded at 2.31pm.

Videos on social media showed people gathered outside Swansea University, which was holding an open day, after an apparent evacuation.

The 4.4 magnitude quake struck approximately 12.5 miles north-east of Swansea at a depth of 7.4km, the British Geological Survey said.

There have been no reports of serious damage or injuries.

The BGS said such an event only occurs in Britain about every two to three years.

Express & Star readers also reported feeling tremors in Great Bridge, Kidderminster, Netherton, Walsall, Coseley and Stafford.

Very quickly after the quake, Brits took to Twitter to post pictures and videos about the "tragic" seismic event - with their tongues firmly in their cheeks.

Mountain Ash Golf Club reported a trophy was dislodged from its cabinet.

Twitter users described their surprise as the aftershock was felt over a hundred miles away.

A spokesman for the BGS said: "It was a reasonably-sized natural disaster".

One Lancastrian, Emmy Bell, took to Twitter to say her auto was rocking in Asda vehicle park in Deepdale.

"The whole building just rocked", said a tweet from the club in Rhondda Cynon Taff. "We hoped that you had a surprisingly "earth moving" experience!"
