SNAP program would be replaced with meal kits, according to Trump proposal

SNAP program would be replaced with meal kits, according to Trump proposal

The 2019 budget summary for the Department of Agriculture says that the government wants to cut $200 billion in benefits over 10 years from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) - commonly referred to as food stamps.

The Trump administration wants to get rid of almost half of some SNAP participants's monthly cash benefits and instead send them a box of food.

White House Office of Management and Budget Director Mick Mulvaney compared it to high-end meal delivery kit service Blue Apron.

The box would cut the current monthly monetary SNAP component in half, leaving the remaining funds to be spent as the recipient sees fit. But consumer watchdogs question whether such a program would actually save money and have further doubts about the government picking out food for millions of Americans.

According to the USDA, the items in the box will include items like long-life milk, juice, grains, cereal, pasta, beans, peanut butter, canned fruit and vegetables, and canned meat or fish. He received electronic benefits each month on a card.

In his 2011 book, "Time to Get Tough", Trump warned of a "food stamp crime wave", claiming half of SNAP recipients have been in the program for almost a decade and attributing this to fraud.

Tuesday was distribution day at the 6th street shelter food bank.

United States to Reduce Troop Levels in Iraq
The contractors spoke on condition of anonymity in line with regulations and declined to reveal the exact size of the drawdown. An Associated Press reporter at the Al-Asad base in western Iraq saw troop movements reflecting the account by contractors.

While I don't have a problem with eliminating some of the ridiculous things that are eligible for SNAP benefits like some energy drinks, soda or candy bars, but cutting out fresh fruits and vegetables crosses a line with me.

The White House said the plan would save the USA almost $130 billion over 10 years, and reduce the potential for EBT fraud.

The USDA predicts that this change could save over $129 billion in ten years, and Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue is hailing the plan as a "bold, innovative approach" that would save taxpayers money while delivering the same "level of food value". It also makes sure they're getting nutritious food.

Other advocates said that the food box proposal was more of a distraction from other cuts and changes in the proposed budgets, like support for additional work requirements that could make it harder for some people to be eligible for benefits. "SNAP is one of the most efficient federal social safety net programs, because retailers are the linchpin of a successful public-private partnership".

This budget - including this proposal - is morally unsound.

Knott and many other anti-hunger groups, such as the Greater Chicago Food Depository, say the existing program works exactly as it should, contracting and expanding to help Americans in times of need.
