New Horizons snaps image 3.8 billion miles away from Earth

New Horizons snaps image 3.8 billion miles away from Earth

The images for "Pale Blue Dot" - part of a composite - were taken 3.75 billion miles (6.06 billion kilometers) away.

This image, taken by New Horizons on December 5, 2017, shows the "Wishing Well" Galactic open star cluster. "And now, we've been able to make images farther from Earth than any spacecraft in history". The craft is now on its way to Kuiper Belt to take pictures of the Kuiper Belt object (KBO) which was named 2014 MU69 on January 1st, 2019. It finished its primary mission with the Pluto flyby in 2015 and is now on an extended mission to explore the Kuiper Belt, helping the USA to complete its reconnaissance of our solar system.

Hours after its first record-breaking image on Dec 5, it captured another. According to a NASA press release, two hours later, it snapped images of KBOs 2012 HZ84 and 2012 HE85, setting yet another record.

After making the first ever fly-by of Pluto, the New Horizons spacecraft is getting ready for an encore. "It is possible for the cameras to be turned on, but it is not a priority for Voyager's Interstellar Mission", according to NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory's website.

Artist's impression of New Horizons encountering a Pluto-like object in the distant Kuiper Belt. NASA says there are plans for New Horizons to make flyby investigations of some two dozen objects, like "dwarf planets and 'Centaurs, ' former [Kuiper Belt objects] in unstable orbits that cross the orbits of the giant planets". While this image broke the long-distance record established by Voyager 1, the probe then turned its LORRI instrument towards objects in its flight path.

Uma Thurman vs. Quentin Tarantino: More Hollywood hypocrisy
The 84-year-old "Carnage" director pleaded guilty to unlawful sex with a minor, but fled the country in 1978 before sentencing. Thurman had safety concerns about driving the vehicle , but she was assured by Tarantino that there were no problems.

But the New Horizons photos are a worthwhile reminder that as technology improves, and as NASA probes and crafts work their way deeper and deeper into space, there's going to be a wealth of interesting, engrossing, and attractive photos as a result.

New Horizons snapped these two farthest-out shots, of Kuiper Belt objects (KBOs) 2012 HZ84 and 2012 HE85, on December 5, 2017.

New Horizons is just the fifth spacecraft to speed beyond the outer planets, so many of its activities set distance records.

For now, though, New Horizons is now enjoying some well-deserved hibernation as it hurtles away from us at a rate of roughly 700,000 miles a day. In the process, it sent back of the distant world, which for decades had appeared as little more than a smudge to even the most advanced telescopes on Earth.
