Larry Nassar sentenced to 40 to 125 years in Eaton County

Larry Nassar sentenced to 40 to 125 years in Eaton County

The former sports doctor whose serial sexual abuse of girls and young women upended the gymnastics world was sentenced Monday to a third prison term of 40 to 125 years behind bars for molesting young athletes at an elite MI training center.

Nassar, who abused hundreds of young women and girls, received his final sentence Monday, a sum of 40 to 125 years in prison at a federal court in Eaton County, Mich, reported CNN. Geddert, a former US women's gymnastics national team coach, is facing a criminal investigation in MI after the sentencing of disgraced ex-sports doctor Larry Nassar, who treated girls at his elite club Twistars near Lansing.

Monday's sentence in Eaton County stems from sexual abuse that occurred at Twistars Gym, where Nassar was a fixture for years, preying on budding gymnasts with his reputation as a healer who could get any injured athlete competition-ready.

Several of Nassar's victims, many of them young women, testified against him during his sentencing trial for sexual assault a few weeks ago.

Rachael Denhollander, one of the first women to come forward publically with her story, was present at the final sentencing hearing on Monday and slammed Michigan State for allegedly attempting to dismiss victims' lawsuits.

"I am not convinced that you truly understand that what you did was wrong, and the devastating impact that you have had on the victims, their families and friends", Judge Cunningham told an expressionless Nassar.

MSU President Lou Anna Simon and athletic director Mark Hollis both resigned amid accusations that university employees missed numerous opportunities to stop Nassar. She proceeded to speak directly to Nassar, informing him that his actions would "haunt survivors [for] the rest of their lives". She says Nassar was believed by authorities for years and "each time he got away, he was empowered to continue and flawless his abuse".

"I feel like a weigh is lifted off my shoulders, this huge burden that was weighing on me for so many years", she said.

Michigan State University is also now facing intense scrutiny for neglecting to act on suspicions about Nassar dating back to the 1990s.

Larissa Boyce, who in 1997 reported Nassar to Michigan State's gymnastics coach, said the shared experience of the victims will make them "sisters for life".

Smith said she had doubts about the large number of women and girls who say they are victims.

He said "everybody had rights", including Nassar.

The most recent proceedings focused on Nassar's time at Twistars, an elite gymnastics club southwest of Lansing where Nassar pleaded guilty to penetrating girls with ungloved hands.

"It's impossible to convey the breadth and depth of how sorry I am to each and every one", he said.

"I just signed your death warrant", Ingham County Circuit Court Judge Rosemarie Aquilina said in announcing his sentence last week.

Nassar will begin serving his sentences in a federal prison but it was not immediately clear which one.
