Kratom - the opioid withdrawal plant - linked to salmonella in 20 states

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration had previously warned not to use the drug after it was tied to 36 deaths. Eight (73%) of 11 people interviewed reported consuming kratom in pills, powder, or tea. 11 people nationwide have been hospitalized. California is reporting the highest number of cases (28).

Salmonella is a very common bacteria that causes food poisoning.

According to an official statement released by the FDA, kratom may not appear as an ingredient on those product labels.

"At this time, CDC recommends that people not consume kratom in any form".

These products are made from the eponymous plant.

Kratom is a drug derived from a plant native to Southeast Asia. Kratom advocates claim that the herbal supplement may be used to help opioid addicts get through withdrawal symptoms in weaning themselves off the powerful painkillers. Earlier this month, the agency declared that kratom acts like an opioid in the human brain.

"The extensive scientific data we've evaluated about kratom provides conclusive evidence that compounds contained in kratom are opioids and are expected to have similar addictive effects as well as risks of abuse, overdose and, in some cases, death", Gottlieb said in a statement.

"I want to be clear on one fact: there are now no FDA-approved therapeutic uses of kratom", Gottlieb said.

On February 6, the FDA classified kratom, a botanical substance widely used as a painkiller, despite agency approval, as an opioid.
