Facebook Will Reportedly Launch Two Smart Speakers With Displays In July

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg (pictured) has been rumored to be interested in entering the consumer home devices market.

The facial recognition technology would be housed in a wide-angle lens on the front of the device that's capable of identifying users to instantly log them into Facebook. Furthermore, Portal will come with more social networking functions and benefit from the music licensing contracts that Facebook has signed with Sony Music Entertainment and the Universal Music Group. Rumors first emerged last summer that the social network was working on such a device, which is expected to include a display that could also be utilized for video chatting. Taiwan's Pegatron is reported to be the sole contract assembler for the devices.

Amazon's Echo Show lists for $229.99 and is now on sale for $179.99.

But it now seems that Facebook is doubling down on its efforts to create an Echo rival, and may in fact launch two speakers. It's also not clear whether one or both devices are meant to be a smart home controller as are Google Home, Alexa, Cortana and HomePod.

We've asked Facebook for comment and will update this article with any response.

Facebook intends to let Portal access third-party streaming services like Spotify and Netflix, the report claims. The speaker was designed by Facebook's Building 8 hardware lab, with the team now tweaking the audio performance and software updates to be sure that everything works as they hope it will.

No. 3 Justice Department Official Stepping Down Amid Turmoil
Rachel Brand , the associate attorney general, will leave the DOJ for a job in the private sector, according to the report . Rachel Brand , the third in line at the US Justice Department, plans to step down , The New York Times reported Friday .

Facebook was initially planning to release the devices in May, but later pushed back the launch date in order to flawless their audio and software, DigiTimes said.

The smart speaker market is starting to get crowded, though Facebook hopes to differentiate themselves with their larger screen and facial recognition. The relatively high pricing of Apple's just-released HomePod at $349 is seen by many as limiting its appeal versus lower-priced Google Home and Echo devices.

If Facebook's Portal device truly features a 15-inch screen, it would more than double the Echo Show in size, which measures up at roughly 7 inches.

According to a report in DigiTimes, Facebook will be launching two smart speaker/display devices this July.

Both the devices are expected to form the base for Facebook's long-term plan to build an ecosystem of video consumer devices that the social media giant plans to bring out during the next five years.

Other interesting information that DigiTimes disclosed pertain to Facebook's partners.
