Egypt unveils 4400-year-old tomb discovered near Giza pyramids

Egypt unveils 4400-year-old tomb discovered near Giza pyramids

An Egyptian archaeological mission led by Dr. Mostafa Waziry, secretary general of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, has discovered the tomb was found during excavation works carried out in theGiza western cemetery, which houses tombs of the Old Kingdom's top officials discovered by previous archaeological missions since 1842.

The paintings also show two scenes featuring monkeys, popular pets at the time, one reaping fruit and another dancing before an orchestra, Al-Waziri said.

He believes Hetpet, a woman thought to be close to ancient Egyptian royals, had another tomb in Giza's western necropolis, which is home to the tombs of top officials of Egypt's Old Kingdom.

It was found during excavations near the Great Pyramid of Giza, Egypt's antiquities ministry says. The tomb was discovered in October 2017 and that's when they started to dig deep to get as much information and history as possible.

Archaeologists discovered a 4,400-year-old burial-place or Tomb, close to the pyramids on the outskirts of Egypt's capital, Cairo.

'We have removed between 250-300 cubic meters of layers of earth to find the tomb.

"Hetpet is represented in very well preserved wall paintings while fishing or hunting", minister Khaled al-Anani stated during the press conference.

Waziri said her main tomb is believed to be in the same area as the new discovery.

This counts as the first archeological discovery in the year 2018.

In January, Egypt placed the ancient statue of one of its most famous pharaohs, Ramses II, in the museum's atrium, which will hold 43 massive statues.

Waziri told Egyptian media that the tomb has the decorative elements and the the architectural style of the 5th Dynasty.

Egypt hopes the inauguration of the new museum, along with the recent discoveries, will draw visitors back to the country.
