Chronic heavy drinking ups risk of all types of dementia

Chronic heavy drinking ups risk of all types of dementia

Of the 57,000 cases studied, 39 per cent were alcohol-related by definition while 18 per cent had an alcohol use disorder as an additional diagnosis.

Scientists said that severe alcohol misuse could directly cause brain damage but that the priority now was to pin down exactly what level of daily drinking increased the risk of dementia.

The study tracked more than 31 million patients discharged from hospitals in France between 2008 and 2013, including 1.1 million cases of dementia.

Alcohol disorders could increase a person's risk of having early-onset dementia. Alcohol use disorder, also referred to as alcoholism, describes a pattern of drinking which has become uncontrolled and problematic.

Alcohol use disorders are also associated with high blood pressure, diabetes, stroke, and heart failure, which may in turn increase the risk of vascular dementia, he said in a statement.

Chronic heavy drinking is the most important and biggest preventable risk factor for every type of dementia, especially early-onset dementia, a new Canadian study has found.

Heavy drinking may be associated with a higher risk for developing dementia, particularly early-onset dementia, according to a new study. "A variety of measures are needed, such as reducing availability, increasing taxation and banning advertising and marketing of alcohol, alongside early detection and treatment of alcohol use disorders".

As a result of the strong association found in this study, the authors recommended the implementation of screening, brief interventions for heavy drinking, and treatment for alcohol use disorders to lower the alcohol-attributable burden of dementia.

American Mikaela Shiffrin charges to gold in giant slalom
Mikaela Shiffrin , pictured at the most recent Killington World Cup, won a gold medal Thursday in her first 2018 Olympics race. Competitors then raced over to embrace her. "You go for gold, and I really went for it", Shiffrin said.

Professor Clive Ballard, of the University of Exeter Medical School, called the study "immensely important", adding: "We should move forward with clear public health messages on the relationship between both alcohol use disorders and alcohol consumption and dementia".

Dr Doug Brown, of Alzheimer's Society, said: "This study suggests alcohol abuse disorders may be responsible for more cases of early-onset dementia than thought".

The study also showed that the average age of dementia onset differed between men and women.

The WHO defines chronic heavy drinking as roughly four to five drinks a day for a man and about three for a woman, per Science Daily. "Before our study ... alcohol was not even listed among the most important risk factors for dementia". "However, both types of research are subject to the usual limitations of observational studies: they cannot definitely establish cause and effect, and any observed relationships are nearly certainly confounded by other factors, not all of which can be easily measured".

Schwarzinger said the information collected showed that once the brain was affected by alcohol consumption, there was no way of repairing the damage.

But Schwarzinger cautioned that people outside France should still take the findings seriously: "While the rate of alcohol use disorders is lower in the United States of America, it remains substantial enough to be considered major risk factor for dementia onset".

"Lastly, heavy drinking clusters (in) people with less education, smoking habits, and/or depression".
