3 jawans dead in avalanche in Jammu and Kashmir

At least three soldiers were on Friday killed after an avalanche hit an army camp in Jammu and Kashmir's Kupwara district.

Earlier, the provincial authorities had issued medium-danger avalanche warning in the upper reaches of Kashmir following predictions of inclement weather. The rescue operation is on to recover the bodies of the soldiers, the police said.

Officials said an avalanche hit the post of Army's Rajputana battalion near Sonpundi post in Machil sector around 4 pm.

This is second major accident due to avalanches in north Kashmir.

"We are still confirming if more soldiers are trapped under the snow".

However, one died on the spot and two others succumbed while being shifted to 92 Base Hospital Badamibagh, he said.

The three deceased army men were identified as Havaldar Kamlesh Kumar, Naik Balbeer and Sepoy Rajinder.

The condition of the injured soldier Sepoy Bipin is stated to be stable.

Last January in a series of four avalanches 24 people, including 20 soldiers and four civilians had died.

Defence Ministry sources said the incident took place in Machil sector around 11.20 a.m. when four soldiers of a patrol came under the snow.
