Turkey vows to destroy US-backed Syrian forces

Turkey vows to destroy US-backed Syrian forces

In an email to Daily Sabah, the USA -led coalition's Public Affairs Office said 230 individuals are now receiving training in the Border Security Force's (BSF) inaugural class and that the force will have up to 30,000 members - half of whom would be recruited from the SDF.

Earlier, Turkish Deputy Prime Minister Bekir Bozdag said that the U.S. is openly supporting the YPG and the PYD terrorist groups in Syria.

The Turkish president spoke about the plans in a speech in the capital city of Ankara on Monday, saying, "A country we call an ally is insisting on forming a terror army on our border, despite all our objections, warnings and well-meant advice". Erdogan said today that Turkish Army units had fired dozens of shells toward Kurdish positions in and around Afrin the previous day.

Damascus denounced the new border force as a "blatant assault" on its sovereignty, Syrian state media said.

"Our mission is to strangle it before it's even born", the Turkish president added.

The force will deploy along the border with Turkey to the north, the Iraqi border to the southeast and along the Euphrates River Valley, which broadly acts as the dividing line separating the USA -backed SDF and Syrian government forces backed by Iran and Russian Federation.

"This new sign of support for the Kurds in northern Syria will give more guarantees for survival for the local administrations the Kurds have build over the past few years", he said.

The US-led coalition provided significant military and logistical support to the SDF as it beat back Isis (Islamic State) militants across Syria.

The United States says it has about 2,000 troops in Syria in the battle against Islamic State.

From the beginning, Ankara has been opposed to USA support to the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), which is nothing but a cover for the Syrian affiliate of the PKK, which the US and European Union have long recognized as a terrorist group.

The Turkish president said that "despite it all" he wanted to work with the U.S. in the region and hoped it would not side with the YPG during the Afrin operation. But a US decision to back Kurdish fighters in northern Syria in recent years has enraged Ankara.

Key powers involved in Syria's civil war have criticised United States plans to help an allied Kurdish-led militia set up a 30,000-strong "border security force".

The announcement naturally fueled anger in Turkey, as officials from the president to the leaders of all mainstream opposition parties expressed concern. "As soon as this 30,000 strong terrorist army comes under threat, they will be the first to turn their guns on the American soldiers".

A source of Syrian foreign Ministry declared SANA that " Syrian people and army are determined to thwart this conspiracy, to end presence of United States and its agents in Syria and to restore legitimate authority throughout territory".

"Fundamentally, this means the breakup of a large territory along the border with Turkey and Iraq", Lavrov said.
