Trump plan would sharply change legal immigration

Trump plan would sharply change legal immigration

Republican Trump has said protections for the young immigrants will end in March unless Congress passes a new law, but told reporters that he might extend the deadline if lawmakers can not reach an agreement by March 5 and that he thinks an immigration deal is possible.

But as President Trump has repeatedly shifted his public statements on any immigration measure, congressional leaders have been increasingly anxious for more clarification on what the White House wants from an eventual bill.

The White House's immigration reform plan - which would provide a pathway to citizenship for about 1.8 million undocumented immigrants brought to the United States as children - garnered a wide range of reactions after its main planks were unveiled Thursday (Jan. 25).

In August 2016, Republican presidential candidate, Donald Trump, released a 10-point immigration plan that included the end of DACA.

Other requirements outlined by the Trump administration include the elimination of the visa lottery and greater immigration restrictions on family connections, limiting immigration to members of a resident's immediate rather than extended family. Jeff Flake, R-Ariz., said President Trump campaigned on securing the border, and he should fulfill that commitment before discussing what to do with "Dreamers".

The plan would not allow parents of those immigrants to seek lawful status, the officials said.

"We're getting started without them", Flake said.

For one thing, though creating a path to citizenship for more immigrants is deeply necessary, Trump's plan doesn't go almost far enough, reaching fewer than 2 million of the estimated 11 million undocumented immigrants in the U.S. Trump is the one who ended legal protections for immigrant youth in the first place, so improving those protections hardly qualifies as a compromise.

DREAMERS SHOULD SUBMIT DACA RENEWALS WHILE THEY CAN!

The strategy would work only if the Senate fails to reach a broad bipartisan accord on an alternative: legislation that would protect the Dreamers and bolster border security, but reject the most draconian aspects of the White House's proposal.

And the outcry from both sides doesn't bode well for the prospect of Congress reaching a deal to address DACA before it expires March 5 - the arbitrary deadline Trump put on the program past year.

Trump's Twitter attack on Schumer - made as the president was flying back from Davos to Washington aboard Air Force One - came just hours after he had suggested he would take a more diplomatic tone in the immigration talks.

Anti-immigration activists also assailed the plan, though for the opposite reason. Congress passed temporary funding and reopened the government on January 22 after promising Democrats they'd take up immigration reform. Arkansas Senator Tom Cotton is someone who's always been pushing for these changes to legal immigration that are included in this framework.

"I get scared and anxious but I have had nothing but support through this", she said.

Representative Mario Diaz-Balart, a Republican Cuban-American from Miami and longtime advocate of immigration reform, praised Trump for putting forward a "serious proposal".

"I do not believe we should be granting a path to citizenship to anybody here illegally", said Texas Sen.

"Chain migration, visa lotteries that don't work, a lot of these situations have to be remedied before we can solve the problem because otherwise the problem's just gonna materialize again", Davidiuk said.
