Train Gets Derailed During Rush-hour in Milan; 5 Dead, Over 100 Injured

A packed commuter train derailed during morning rush hour outside of Milan, Italy, killing at least four and injuring more than 100.

Two carriages peeled off the rails and came to rest at an angle.

According to Italian publication La Repubblica, passengers say they felt the train vibrating for some time and with intensity before it left the tracks.

The carabinieri police confirmed at least two people had been killed, 10 seriously injured and dozens more slightly injured.

Italian agency ANSA reported the commuter train that was travelling from Cremona to Milan. It happened just before 07:00 (06:00 GMT).

On TV footage, helicopters could be seen taking the injured to nearby hospitals.

A witness told Repubblica newspaper that the train "began to tremble" before the accident.

"Two carriages were half-worn, [it was] a chilling scene", A traveler disclosed to Italy's Rai News.

RFI said it had detected some structural collapse in the track but that it was still unclear whether this was a cause or a effect of the accident.

The company said via Twitter that the train had suffered a "technical problem". There is known to have been another instance of a train partially derailing near Pioltello in July 2017, though without causing any injuries.
