Tesla sedan hits fire truck during self-driving test in Los Angeles

Tesla sedan hits fire truck during self-driving test in Los Angeles

The luxury vehicle slammed into the back of a fire engine while traveling at a speed of 65 miles per hour on Monday, Culver City firefighters tweeted.

Tesla Autopilot relieves drivers of the most tedious and potentially unsafe aspects of road travel.

The car's owner subsequently claimed it had been in Autopilot mode at the time.

No one was seriously injured in the Bay Area wreck; the firefighters were parked in the emergency lane and vehicle pool lane, responding to a crash on the other side of their truck, according to the San Jose Mercury News. Those vehicles both had their lights flashing. None of the fire crew were hurt, although Powell noted that if his team had ben in their usual position at the back of the truck then there "probably would not have been a very good outcome".

The self-driving hardware and software inside the Tesla Model S includes an onboard computer and a set of eight cameras that are supposed to provide 360 degree visibility around the vehicle for a range of up to 820 feet, the company website states. If this was a case of the driver sticking on Autopilot, and forgetting their responsibility to watch the road ahead it wouldn't be the first time.

The NTSB found no defects in a Tesla autopilot system that was in use during a fatal crash in May 2016, the New York Times reported in January 2017. But as word of another Tesla autopilot crash spread, the case of auto as designated driver became an interesting thought exercise for anyone with more than a passing interest in vehicles that drive themselves.

The safety board did note in its report that the introduction of Tesla's Autosteer software had cut collisions by 40 per cent. In other words, you have to be sober, so Tesla's autopilot won't get you out of a DUI. KRON, the Bay Area News Network, reports that police say the suspect's blood alcohol content (BAC) was over twice the legal limit, presumably based upon their measurement of that BAC. Previously, the NTSB linked Tesla's autopilot function to a in Florida in 2016 where a Model S driver died when his auto slid underneath a semi-trailer.

He was wrong, of course, and was ultimately jailed under suspicion of driving under the influence.

As with any piece of hardware, just RTFM.

Some consumer advocates have accused Tesla of using technology that hasn't been safely tested after a number of accidents involving the autopilot mode in Tesla vehicles in recent years.
