Spain to seek Catalan politician's arrest on Denmark visit

Catalonia's fugitive former leader, Carles Puigdemont, says new technologies would allow him to govern from Belgium, AP reports.

SPANISH prosecutors have asked the country's Supreme Court to re-activate an global arrest warrant for Carles Puigdemont.

Pablo Llarena, the judge in charge of the case against Puigdemont, will rule on the request to reactive the warrant.

Puigdemont is being investigated by Spain over a unilateral declaration of independence by Catalonia's parliament on October 27.

In early December, Llarena had dropped a European arrest warrant for Puigdemont and four of his deputies who fled to Belgium, saying that it would complicate the overall probe into the region's leaders but warned they would be arrested if they return.

The Spanish government has charged roughly a dozen former Catalan ministers with various crimes, including sedition and rebellion, in relation to their actions leading up to the declaration of independence. Speaking to a crowded auditorium at the University of Copenhagen, he said that he sought to regain his old job as Catalonia's president because supporters of secession had won the most seats in the recent election. Madrid made the request following Puigdemont's first trip outside of Belgium.

"President Puigdemont never dismissed the possibility of presenting and submitting his candidacy in person", the lawyer told Catalonian public television, adding that his client was "aware of the risks he faces".

He also talked about an April 25 constitutional referendum in the Faeroe Islands, a Danish territory.

As Spain's legal system wrestled over arresting Puigdemont, the ousted leader's name was put forward as a candidate for president.

But Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy reiterated Saturday that governing Catalonia from overseas would be "illegal".

Spain's state prosecutor is seeking his arrest in Denmark. He apparently travelled to the city to host a debate on Catalonia.

The speaker of the Catalan parliament is due today to announce his candidate to become the president of the region.

A Faeroese lawmaker invited Puigdemont to the Danish Parliament on Tuesday.

His comments are coming a month after his arrest warrant and that of five other members of the Catalonia government was withdrawn by a court in Spain.
