S.Africa's ANC confirms talks on Zuma exit

Since Ramaphosa won a tightly contested party leadership race in December he has pledged to clean up the image of the ANC and tackle the corruption that has dogged Zuma's tenure, piling pressure on the scandal-plagued president.

This was made known by spokesman Ace Magashule in an interaction with journalists.

"The financial markets have reacted very positively to these and related developments in the ANC, as have numerous disaffected voices who previous year were clamouring for change in the ruling party", said NKC African Economics analyst Gary van Staden.

Speaking to the media after a two-day lekgotla‚ Magashule said the ANC officials were "seized with the matter" but would not give any details of what the discussions would entail.

Although Cyril Ramaphosa was elected by ANC National Conference delegates, many outside that conference hoped he would defeat Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma because he represented a potential beginning of the defeat of the various strands of Jacob Zuma's rule, affecting not only the ANC but the state itself.

Zuma, 75, could leave office either by resigning, through losing a motion of no-confidence in parliament or impeachment proceedings.

His comments come amid speculation that Zuma could be shown the door before the State of the Nation Address in February.

"It is a delicate procedure to engineer an early retirement for President Zuma", political analyst Daniel Silke told AFP.

"The forum presents South Africa with a platform to showcase its attractiveness as an investment destination and trade partner; set out plans that are unfolding to secure improved and inclusive economic growth; and contribute to efforts to respond to societal challenges globally", he said. "We haven't reached a decision that President Zuma must go or President Zuma must stay".
