MSU investigation 'top priority' for Michigan Attorney General

MSU investigation 'top priority' for Michigan Attorney General

A special prosecutor will investigate Michigan State University "from the president's office down" over how former MSU sports physician Larry Nassar could have sexually abused girls and young women for almost 20 years without university action, Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette said Saturday.

Governor Brian Calley is calling on Michigan State University to create a fund that will compensate victims of Larry Nassar.

"The breadth and ripple of this defendant's abuse and destruction is almost infinite", Assistant Attorney General Angela Povilaitis said in her remarks before the sentencing.

It offers a compelling and detailed case - built around never-before-publicized reports of sexual or violent incidents, purportedly kept quiet by an array of university or university-related officials - for how deeply the dysfunction may run at the Big Ten school that already this week has seen the resignations of university president Lou Anna Simon and athletic director Mark Hollis.

Schuette said at a news conference Saturday that the independent probe will shine a bright light on every corner of the university. "My department in this investigation will find out who knew what and when, who took action, who failed to take action, what did and did not happen, and what should have happened".

After numerous demands that she step down, hearing, President Simon, finally did, still claiming that the buck that sat on her desk wasn't hers.

Padmaavat protests: Supreme Court to hear plea by Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh today
Protesters claim the film falsely depicts a romance between 14th-century Hindu queen Padmavati and Muslim ruler Alauddin Khilji. The apex court also restrained other states from issuing any such notification or order banning the screening of the movie.

“I dont need advice from the Board of Trustees at MSU about how to conduct an investigation, ” Schuette said.

"She's always been a little shy, but I was so proud of her for testifying publicly and marching tonight - all the support, it's just made my sister's voice louder", Alyse Anderson said.

Also Friday, USA Gymnastics confirmed Friday that its entire board of directors would resign as requested by the U.S. Olympic Committee.

In ESPN's report, former Michigan State sexual-assault counselor Lauren Allswede was interviewed.

Schuette in February of 2017 deferred questions about possible criminal charges for other MSU employees who may have known about Nassar's sexual assaults to Patrick Fitzgerald, an attorney MSU hired to conduct its own review. Olympic champion Simone Biles came forward as Nassar victim on January 15 and wondered why she had to continue to train at the Karolyi Ranch in Texas, a place where she said Nassar abused her earlier in her career. The investigation accounted for 11 of the 16 players reportedly accused of sexual assault on Dantonio's watch since 2007. He served on the board of Crime Victim Services.

Calley is Attorney General Bill Schuette's main rival for the Republican nomination for MI governor, and is a close ally of current Gov. Rick Snyder. The victims include some of the most famous Olympic gymnasts in American history, including gold medalist Aly Raisman, as well as athletes at Michigan State University and at USA Gymnastics. Under the state constitution, the governor can remove or suspend public officers for "gross neglect of duty", corruption or "other misfeasance or malfeasance". He has been accused of sexual misconduct by more than 150 women.
