Lebanon allows Spielberg film 'The Post' after censorship threat

Lebanon has banned the new Steven Spielberg film The Post because of his links to Israel, Hollywood sources say.

Though "Wonder Woman" passed the country's normal screening procedures, the Campaign to Boycott Supporters of Israel-Lebanon put pressure on the government to block the film, describing it as "the Israeli Soldier film".

Lebanon technically is officially at war with Israel and bans Israeli products.

An unidentified official from General Security told Lebanese daily Annahar that the ban against the film was not negotiable because Spielberg is on the Arab boycott list, which Lebanon legally abides by. The Post, starring Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep and focusing on the publication of the Pentagon Papers, was scheduled to premiere in Beirut on January 18. Jungle isn't an Israeli movie, but it does star Daniel Radcliffe portraying the real-life story of Yossi Ghinsberg, an Israeli tourist who was lost in the Amazon jungle for several weeks in 1981 and survived despite overwhelming odds. "We think that notwithstanding the fame and the importance of Steven Spielberg, for the sake of our martyrs and for the sake of Lebanon, our national dignity is more important than any creative elements connected to this film". In these cases, Spielberg's credit as the director has been censored on promotional posters. Director Ziad Doueiri, who is in the running for an Oscar for his latest film, The Insult, was detained on a recent trip back to his homeland because sections of his 2012 film The Attack had been filmed in Israel, in contravention of Lebanon's strict laws regarding their neighbours.

They're the first pair of running backs on the same team to each have at least 1,500 yards from scrimmage in a season. Teddy Bridgewater , who had been Keenum's backup for the final eight games of the regular season, was inactive.

The action movie "Wonder Woman" was refused permission to be shown a year ago because the lead actress, Gal Gadot, is an Israeli citizen who had served in the Israeli military. Lebanon banned the film upon its release in 1993.

Set in the early 1970s, The Post centers on the journalists of the Washington Post and the New York Times who uncovered the Pentagon Papers, secret documents that revealed information about the US government's involvement in the Vietnam War.

Free speech advocates in Lebanon noted the irony of banning a movie whose plot promotes press freedoms.
