Janelle Monae Introduces Kesha With a Powerful Message About the #MeToo Movement

Janelle Monae Introduces Kesha With a Powerful Message About the #MeToo Movement

From the moment Kesha was announced as a performer at this year's Grammy Awards ceremony in NY, expectations that she'd deliver a highly emotionally-charged performance were high. She was noticeably emotional while performing the song tonight, and rightfully so.

"So let's work together, women and men, as a united music industry committed to creating more safe work environments, equal pay and access for all women", she concluded before praising Kesha for "speaking her truth" on her GRAMMY-nominated album, Rainbow - and receiving praise of her own on Twitter.

"Praying" is an autobiographical song clearly directed at Dr. Luke, the producer whom Kesha accuses of raping and psychologically tormenting her.

"We're honored to stand with you and welcome you, Kesha".

Released in July of last year, "Praying" was Kesha's first single in four years, and her first release since the start of her legal battle with Dr. Luke. He has denied the allegations.

It's the kind of sentiment that is acceptable and laudable in 2018; in 2014, however, Kesha's crusade to bring down her alleged abuser was a startling outlier.

Train Gets Derailed During Rush-hour in Milan; 5 Dead, Over 100 Injured
The carabinieri police confirmed at least two people had been killed, 10 seriously injured and dozens more slightly injured. In 2009, 32 people were killed when a freight train carrying liquefied petroleum gas derailed and exploded in Tuscany.

"We come in peace, but we mean business", she said, while donning a Time's Up pin.

Kesha performs with (L-R) Bebe Rexha, Cyndi Lauper and Camila Cabello onstage during the 60th Annual GRAMMY Awards at Madison Square Garden on January 28, 2018 in New York City.

In another sign of support for #MeToo movement, attendees including pop superstar Lady Gaga wore white roses in solidarity with survivors of abuse and in a call for gender equality.

"When I wrote 'Praying, ' with Ben Abraham and Ryan Lewis, I just felt as if I had gotten a huge weight off of my shoulders", she wrote on Instagram. "It felt like an emotional raw victory for myself, one step closer to healing", Kesha said of writing the song.

The singer broke down in tears at the end of her performance and hugged the artists accompanying her on stage.
