How Google's 'speed update' will affect mobile search

How Google's 'speed update' will affect mobile search

It will start in July 2018, when page speed will be a ranking factor for Google mobile searches. Mobile-first indexing is a major shift away from the current practice of using computer programs to crawl, index and rank websites by first looking at the desktop version.

Google has been prepping website owners for the Speed Update for sometime.

Speaking of mobile overtaking desktop, the changes mentioned above, which are obviously focused on improving mobile-based experience, are critical steps for Google, if only because more people are using smartphones than computers nowadays for basic features, most especially a quick search query. It is encouraging developers to think about how performance affects user experience of their page, and to consider user experience metrics.

The Speed Update, as Google is calling it, is created to encourage website owners to optimize their sites for mobile use at a time when a growing number of people have begun using smartphones and tablets to browse and search online.

A tool that indicates how well a page performs on the Chrome UX Report and suggests performance optimizations. Users may waste less time and data on sites too slow to open on a mobile device.

Google has announced a significant change to its search results ranking system. There will be times where even slower loading pages will still be ranked higher, as long as it still contains the most relevant content relative to the search query. Only the slowest pages will be affected by this update, and the same standards will be applied to all sites regardless of the technology used to build them. By April of previous year, Google News started giving priority to news articles published on AMP sites.
