Google acquires United Kingdom technology start-up Redux

Google acquires United Kingdom technology start-up Redux

No financial details of the acquisition are presently known, though the deal may have ended up being worth north of $10 million, with Redux raising half of that sum in capital funding last March alone. However, it is believed the deal went through in August.

The Verge tested startup's technology a year ago on a tablet. "Moreover, our surface audio technology is more power efficient than traditional micro speakers, which means people can play music and watch videos on their phones for longer between charges".

At the time, it said the sound quality was 'decent'.

It also has technologies that add haptic feedback on mobile displays, which provides vibrations to imitate what it feels like to push physical buttons. The tech is somewhat similar to 3D Touch, Apple's force-sensitive display feature on iPhones.

So far, Redux has only been able to use its technologies inside PCs and some auto infotainment systems - but that could be about to change.

As for what Google could do with Redux, the search giant may build smartphones that eschew speakers. However, both smartphones needed to have some bezels to make that possible.

This would free up space for other components, such as larger batteries or a better cameras, in Google products such as Pixel phones. Needless to say, the tech that helps integrate smartphone speakers within the display will be invaluable for Google or any other smartphone manufacturers. This could allow for numerous ways to save space within a compact mobile device. It could also improve waterproofing for future phones since it eliminates the need for speaker holes.

Redux has demoed its technology on smartphone and tablet displays, in the past, and that very well may be Google Inc (GOOG)'s core intended use for this exciting technology.

Google has remained quiet on the acquisition of Redux.
