Expect Russian meddling in U.S. midterm poll, warns Central Intelligence Agency boss

Central Intelligence Agency director Mike Pompeo has said that Chinese efforts to exert influence over the West are just as concerning as Russian subversion, warning in a television interview of the theft of commercial information and infiltration of schools and hospitals by spies loyal to Beijing.

The US is already in the throes of an investigation by special counsel Robert Mueller into alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election, accusations that both Moscow and the White House administration deny.

"The Russians have a long history of these information campaigns - that part of it is not new", Pompeo said.

"I hope that they will rise up and understand that it is not the best interests of their country to send forces to places like Europe as proxies to try and conduct malign activity in Europe when there's so much that can be done to make Iran a better place", he said.

The intelligence community concluded in a report released previous year that Russian Federation conducted a campaign aimed at helping President TrumpDonald John TrumpCynthia Nixon calls for Americans to "take to the streets" if Trump fires Mueller Trump declines to implement new Russian Federation sanctions Comey praises McCabe: He "stood tall" while "small people" tried to tear down the FBI MORE win the 2016 presidential election. "I have every expectation that they will continue to try and do that".

Kannada organisations call for state wide Bandh, normal life hit hard
Kannada Paksha leader Vatal Nagaraj along with the Mahadayi Agitation Committee had planned for a Karnataka bandh on January 27. The outfits are demanding that Prime Minister Narendra Modi intervenes in the dispute between Goa and Karnataka.

He added that China also poses a threat and has the ability to gain access to American information. "We see it in our schools, we see it in our hospitals and medical systems, we see it throughout corporate America".

Citing examples of efforts at stealing U.S. information, Mike Pompeo said the scale of the two economies must be kept in mind in all considerations.

"I think that we collectively, the United States and our intelligence partners around the world, have developed a pretty clear understanding of (North Korean leader) Kim Jong Un's capability", he said. He also said North Korea may have the ability to strike the United States with nuclear missiles "in a handful of months".

The CIA director also answered questions about the conflict with North Korea, President Donald Trump's rhetoric, and Michael Wolff's book "Fire and Fury".

"It is absurd, the claim that the President is not engaged and does not have a grasp on these important issues is unsafe and false", Mr Pompeo said.
