Astronaut John Young remembered as "fearless"

Veteran astronaut John Young archived a number of milestones over the course of his 42 year career at NASA: a Navy pilot who served during the Korean War, he flew in space six time with some of the agency's biggest programs, was the ninth person to walk on the moon, and the first to pilot the Space Shuttle.

He eventually became one of the most accomplished astronauts in the history of the United States space programme. Spanning three generations of spaceflight, he went on to fly in space six times. He flew the first space shuttle mission.

Saddened for the loss of former astronaut colleague John Young - the astronauts' astronaut, a true legend.

In 1969, Young was the commander of the Apollo 10 flight to the Moon, a preparation flight for the eventual Apollo 11 Moon landing several months later. Counting his takeoff from the moon in 1972 as commander of Apollo 16, his blastoff tally stood at seven, for decades a world record. I can see Ray Crater from here.

"The Moon is a very nice place", he had said. Young flew twice to the Moon, walked on its surface & flew the first Space Shuttle mission. It was the first time Nasa put men on a vehicle's initial voyage, and the earliest manned spacecraft launched by solid rocket boosters.

Astronaut Wally Schirra, who was not flying on the mission, bought the corned beef sandwich on rye bread from a delicatessen in Cocoa Beach, Florida, and asked Young to give it to Grissom in space.

Mr Young remained an active astronaut into his early 70s and held on to his role as Nasa's conscience until his retirement in 2004.

Mr Young spent his last 17 years at Johnson Space Centre in Houston in management, focusing on safety issues.

In news interviews and testimony to the presidential commission that investigated the accident, he warned that space shuttles would continue to reveal defects. You don't have to be a rocket scientist to figure this out. His achievements have taken space from an unknown environment to the expanding frontier we explore today. "No, I figured we'd be up there forever, and we'd keep right on going and set up bases on the moon and use it for all the benefits that we could get from it, which is plenty of them", Young said.

While Young retired from NASA in 2004, he remained a constant figure at the agency, Young remained at NASA until 2004, when he retired at the age of 74. He eventually became a Navy fighter and test pilot.
