Same Sex Marriage Has Passed The Final Vote!

Same Sex Marriage Has Passed The Final Vote!

"What a day for love, for equality, for respect", said.

"What a day! What a day for love, for quality, for respect!"

"Love has won, and it's time to pop the bubbly", Greens MP and same-sex marriage supporter Adam Bandt said. "Marriage equality is finally the law of the land and it's time to start celebrating".

When the results of the vote in favour of the Bill were announced, the House and public galleries were full of cheers, shouts, applause, hugs, kisses and general jubilation, reported the BBC.

Those who opposed the bill were Bob Katter, Keith Pitt, David Littleproud and Russell Broadbent.

About 12.7 million people participated in the survey, which had a response rate of almost 80% - which is considered very high.

"This Parliament, when we passed the marriage equality law, is not a gift from us to LGBTIQ Australians, equality is never a gift to be given".

Just under 5m people voted "no", with conservative politicians using their rejection as a catalyst to push for religious exemptions to be included in the bill.

If the House of Representatives supported such an amendment, then the altered bill would have to return to the Senate for ratification, delaying the reform.

One week ago the Senate also passed the same-sex marriage bill.

"Thank you Australia", wrote Alex Greenwich, a gay member of the New South Wales Parliament, after the vote.

Several parliamentarians who supported the changes wore rainbow-coloured socks or ties, including Warren Entsch, described in local media as a "fiercely heterosexual... crocodile-farming, bull-catching Liberal". More than 100 MPs spoke on the Bill, which delayed its passing until Thursday, the final sitting day before the long summer break.

"This bill will take from no-one; it simply makes our nation a kinder and a fairer place", Entsch told parliament this week.

The ACT government, meanwhile, has promised to waive the marriage certificate fees for around 80 couples who were married when the territory briefly legalised same-sex marriage in 2013.
