IOC suspends Russian Olympic committee

IOC suspends Russian Olympic committee

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced Tuesday that it has suspended Russia's Olympic team from competing in the 2018 Winter Olympics over allegations of doping.

However some Russian athletes will be allowed to compete in South Korea under a neutral flag, providing they can prove they are not implicated in the doping scandal and have also undergone regular anti-doping tests. Yet, if individual athletes from the country wish to compete, they must undergo testing requirements to ensure "a level playing field". The Russian flag will not fly and its anthem will not play during the opening, closing and medal ceremonies.

The Schmid report found evidence of "the systemic manipulation of the anti-doping rules and system" which back up previous allegations of government involvement in cheating in the run up to and during the Winter Olympics nearly four years ago.

Tatyana Tarasova, a prominent Russian figure skating coach, said the International Olympic Committee decision was "absolutely unjust".

The IOC announced the decision after examining evidence of state-sponsored doping over several years that reached its zenith at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. The IOC has also banned Mutko and his deputy Yury Nagornykh from future games. due to their direct involvement with the state-sponsored doping.

Ahead of the IOC's decision, NPR's Lucian Kim visited Moscow's famous Gorky Park to hear what Russians are making of the claims against their country in some of its most revered sports.

United Kingdom and European Union fail to reach Brexit deal after crunch Brussels meeting
The DUP has only 10 seats out of 650 in Britain's House of Commons, but without their support May's government would fall. However, unionists tend to view with scepticism any proposal for harmonisation of rules on either side of the border.

In a press release the IOC added that the Russian Olympic Committee must "reimburse the costs incurred by the IOC on the investigations and to contribute to the establishment of the Independent Testing Authority (ITA) for the total sum of United States dollars 15 million, to build the capacity and integrity of the global anti-doping system".

"The IOC, at its absolute discretion, will ultimately determine the athletes to be invited from the list", said the IOC's statement, ruling out all those to have previously committed a doping violation.

IOC President Thomas Bach and other members of the Olympic governing body pronounced Russia's fate at a news conference that was scheduled for 1:30 p.m. ET.

The IOC decision sparked outrage in Russian Federation, with many saying the country was humiliated and others suggesting to boycott the games.

It's said that Russia's state-backed doping is only rivaled by how East Germany got down over numerous decades, but the impact here could be intriguing. Some Russian MPs immediately raised the possibility that Russia may boycott the Winter Olympics, with the first deputy speaker of Russia's parliament, Ivan Melnikov, saying it would be "incorrect" for Russia's team to travel to Pyeongchang under a neutral flag.
