Former US NSA pleads guilty to lying to Federal Bureau of Investigation

Former US NSA pleads guilty to lying to Federal Bureau of Investigation

Michael Flynn, right, arrives at the E. Barrett Prettyman Federal Courthouse in Washington, D.C., on December 1.

But, he said, "through my faith in God, I am working to set things right. I accept full responsibility for my actions", he said.

Flynn's plea, Warner said, "comes on the heels of a new report about the President's efforts to silence the independent, bipartisan Senate investigation into ties between Trump associates and Russian Federation".

The charges [information, PDF], brought by Special Counsel Robert Mueller [official website], are related to two specific statements that Flynn made to the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Former national security adviser Michael Flynn will reportedly testify in court that President Donald Trump directed him to make contact with the Russians. In the first statement Flynn made on December 29, 2016, Flynn denied making a request to a Russian ambassador to "refrain from escalating the situation" after the United States imposed sanctions on Russia and Flynn denied recalling that the Russian ambassador then stated they will "moderate" their response due the the request. He also receives a speaking fee from a Russian government-run television network that US officials consider a propaganda outlet.

Then again, despite whatever appearance for the Trump administration that Flynn's testimony might portray, Michael Flynn is a known liar, and has admitted as such.

Flynn also agreed to cooperate with Mueller's probe, which focuses on Russian meddling in the 2016 election and possible coordination between Russia and Trump's team in the campaign that sent the Republican businessman to the White House.

This past Valentine's Day, President Trump asked then FBI Director James Comey to stick around following a meeting with a group of national security officials in the Oval Office.

Mount Agung erupts for the second time
The latest alert - a red warning - means an eruption is forecast to be "imminent" after nearby locals spotted volcanic ash rain. Indonesia sits on the Pacific "Ring of Fire" where tectonic plates collide, causing frequent seismic and volcanic activity.

Flynn's pledge to cooperate with Mueller could lead to further charges, but an attorney for Trump, Ty Cobb, said no one else was affected by this latest development.

He is prepared to testify that, as a candidate, Trump "directed him to make contact with the Russians".

As per the charge sheet, 58-year-old Flynn, a retired general, lied when he told investigators that he did not ask Kislyak to "refrain from escalating the situation" in response to sanctions that then-president Barack Obama had imposed on Russian Federation, and that he did not ask the ambassador to either delay or defeat a related UN Security Council vote.

The White House, which has long denied any wrongdoing in relation to Moscow, said Flynn's false statements "mirror the false statements to White House officials which resulted in his resignation in February of this year".

But Trump has repeatedly rejected that view.

"Since the first day I took office, all you hear is the phony Democrat excuse for losing the election, Russia, Russia, Russia", he tweeted last week.

Mueller's charging documents state bluntly that Flynn interfered with the FBI's inquiry into Trump-Russia collusion.

Next, Flynn can tell Mueller what, if anything, he knows about the contacts between Russian Federation and a series of Trump officials in 2016, including meetings, emails, phone calls and trips involving Paul Manafort, Rick Gates, Donald Trump Jr., Jared Kushner, Carter Page, Roger Stone and George Papadopoulos.
