Arrest made in Mariah Woods disappearance; missing girl believed to be deceased

Authorities said Saturday afternoon it was with "deep sadness" that they believed a missing 3-year-old North Carolina girl was dead.

She made a plea for the girl's safe return Monday night.

The FBI said in a statement on Friday that the search for Mariah Woods took deputies from the New Hanover County Sheriff's Office to a local creek, where they used sonar.

Kimrey is being charged with concealing of death, obstruction of justice, second-degree burglary, felony larceny and possession of stolen property. She said her boyfriend saw the child at about midnight when she got up and he told her to go back to bed.

An Amber Alert was issued Sunday, when Mariah was last seen around 11 p.m.

Arrest warrants say a man took the body of his girlfriend's 3-year-old daughter from where she died, knowing her death was not natural.

FBI Special Agent-in-Charge Stanley Meador said authorities spent days searching by foot, boat and in the water for any leads.

The FBI released this photo of Mariah Woods, who was reporting missing on November 27, 2017. Police and the Federal Bureau of Investigation are no longer looking to find a missing little girl; they're trying to recover her body.

The sheriff's office says the search for Mariah is now a recovery process.

Kimrey is now being held at the Onslow County Detention Center under a $1,010,000 bond. The search was organized by Team Adam, a program for the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children that provides on-site assistance to law enforcement agencies and families in cases of missing children, according to Onslow County Sheriff Hans Miller.

"We had a total of 730 volunteers help us today", Miller said.

The woman, Jetta Long, told the news station Wednesday morning that she was frustrated that the surveillance photos "may have gotten the hopes of the family up". "This is my world, this is my angel", she said.

The FBI says they have been sending "items of interest" to their lab in Quantico, Virginia, for priority testing in the case. She has been missing from her home since Monday. They said no information is too small or insignificant when looking for the missing child.
