16 dead after boat capsizes in Andhra

At least 16 people, including women and children, died Sunday after a boat packed with 38 passengers capsized in a river in southern India, police said.

The administration was investigating what exactly caused the incident, but the initial probe found that the private boat operator did not have the necessary permission to ferry people, Lakshmikantham said.

A total of 38 passengers and three crew members were on-board the vessel, which was operated by a private company and traveling along the Krishna river near Vijayawada on Sunday. They said that the passengers were stuck beneath the boat and despite having the life jackets they were struggling to come out. Some of the survivors complained that the police that the boat was shaking right from moment it started from Bhavani Island.

The boat's carrying capacity is 24 people.

When contacted, a Simple Water Sports representative claimed that they hadn't overcrowded the boat and there were only 20 passengers on the boat. As many as 15 people were either rescued by local fishermen or swam to safety.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu has expressed his condolences to the bereaved family.

Director general of police N Sambasiva Rao, Krishna district collector Lakshmi Kantham and the other senior officials of the district administration are personally supervising the rescue operations.
